Chapter 30
Kiu Wai is frozen and speechless at the sight of his son and his wife. He doesn’t how to react to Mei Ling. Mei Chun has not been on his mind in a while. He even forgets himself that he’s married to her.
Wai Sun comes running to him and wraps his arms around Kiu Wai’s legs: I finally get to see you Father.
Mei Chun chases after him: Wai Sun, why do you always run away from me?
She then fix her eyes on Kiu Wai and smiles: Kiu Wai, I am glad to find you here.
Mei Ling is also speechless in this moment. She doesn’t know what to think.
Kiu Wai picks up his son and holds him: Wai Sun, how did you find me? Mei Chun: Mr.Koo asked the workers and they told us that you’re here.
Mei Chun then directs her focus to Mei Ling: Who is she? Kiu Wai feels terrible inside, but manages to compose: Mei Chun, this is teacher Ling. She is the teacher in this town.
Kiu Wai looks into Mei Ling’s eyes with a heavy heart: Mei Ling, this is……. Kiu Wai pauses and cannot finish the introduction.
Mei Chun then finishes for Kiu Wai: Kiu Wai’s wife.
Mei Ling’s heart sinks to the bottom. She is thrown back into the reality from the fantasy that she had lived the past couple of days. Although she knows that Kiu Wai is married, she never thought it could hurt her like this. She is telling herself to be strong and deal with the reality that Kiu Wai belongs to another woman and she should stop dreaming about him. She forces herself to think of her lover to put herself straight back on her track. All her hopes and dreams with Kiu Wai should stop at this moment.
Mei Ling forces a genuine smile on her face and asks the couple: And this is your son?
Kiu Wai painfully replies: Yes, this is my son. Mei Chun quickly adds: And I am his mother.
Mei Ling is surprised to find out that Kiu Wai has a son because he has never mentioned to her. But whatever it is, his family is standing in front of her. A thousand knives are stabbing her heart. The image of family with a child is everything that Mei Ling has dreamed of having. Suddenly, she sees herself on the other side of this image. She wants to burst out in tears, but has to hold back.
Mei Ling turns to the boy to hide her sadness: Hi little boy. What is your name? Wai Sun: I am Wai Sun, my father’s treasure. Kiu Wai: Wai Sun, don’t talk like that. Mei Ling, don’t mind him, he’s very spoiled. Mei Ling: Wai Sun, how old are you? Do you go to school? Wai Sun: I am six years old. I don’t go to school. Mother has teachers come to our house to teach me. Mei Ling: What a lucky boy.
Mei Ling then thinks to herself that her babies are at this age right now. She looks at the boy with a special feeling, as if he reminds her of her own son that she hasn’t found yet.
Wai Sun then slips down from his father’s arms and runs around the house. He starts to climb on table and chairs and pick up anything that he sees.
Kiu Wai angrily yells out: Wai Sun, what are you doing? Put it down! Mei Chun apologizes: I am so sorry teacher Ling. He is very spoiled. He doesn’t really listen to anyone. Mei Ling: Hmmm, every child can be disciplined, if he’s disciplined the right way.
Kiu Wai runs after Wai Sun as he runs around Mei Ling’s house. Mei Ling can see that this boy is out of control. She immediately stands in front of him. She grabs him, holds him up, and places him seated on a chair. She stares into his eyes with a serious look.
For some unknown reason, Wai Sun looks straight back into her eyes and freezes himself. He continues to sit in the chair without moving. Both are staring into each other’s eyes in silence. Kiu Wai and Mei Chun are astonished to see this.
Mei Ling then speaks firmly to Wai Sun: You little boy, are out of controlled. I do not tolerate this kind of behavior in my house. You are six year old already, not a 2 year old. Can you behave like one? Wai Sun softly speaks with fear: Yes. Mei Ling continues: You have to listen to adults, especially your parents. If you continue to be a bad boy, no one would want to be around you. You understand? Wai Sun still looks straight into her eyes and replies: Yes, I understand.
Kiu Wai smiles and comes over to Mei Ling: Mei Ling, he really responds to you. You are a good teacher indeed. Mei Chun is shocked that her son can be controlled by this teacher: Teacher Ling, I would really like it if you agree to come home with us and be Wai Sun’s teacher.
Kiu Wai can’t believe what his wife has just said. Mei Ling looks up and astonished.
Mei Chun: Teacher Ling, I have not found any teacher who could discipline like that. Please, I beg you, can you help us and Wai Sun? You stay with us. We will have a room for you and we will pay you double what you are paid at school.
Mei Ling looks over to Kiu Wai. Kiu Wai looks at Mei Ling and he can tell the pain in her eyes. He knows that he’s being selfish, but he wants Mei Ling to be close to him forever. This is probably the best way him to be close to her until he finds a permanent solution. Deep down, he is praying that she would say yes.
Mei Ling: I am sorry Mrs.Ton, I don’t think I can. It’s not about they money. It’s about the kids. The children really need me here.
Wai Sun suddenly comes over to Mei Ling and grabs her hand: Teacher Ling, I am really sorry that I misbehaved earlier. Please be my teacher. I don’t know why I really like you. I rarely like any teachers I have back at home.
Mei Ling feels the warmthness from the boy as he holds her hands. It’s very comforting to her and it’s something she’s been longing for so long. She feels the urge to cry as she’s overwhelmed with this happiness that has just been sent to her heart.
Mei Ling looks down at Wai Sun and pats his head. She is imagining that he is her own son that she has been searching for the past six years.
Mei Ling speaks softly: Wai Sun, I don’t know. Let me think about it.
Mei Ling doesn’t even know why she said that.
Mei Chun: Yes, think about it. We will be here until Kiu Wai is done with the project here.
Mei Ling and Kiu Wai exchange glances. Kiu Wai is excited that Mei Ling is entertaining this thought. On the other hand, Mei Ling is more confused than ever, not only she is being drawn to Kiu Wai, but also to his son.
Should she follow her heart to continue to be close Kiu Wai, even if it means that she’s just his son’s teacher, or should she continue with her journey to find her LOVER and her twins?

Chapter 31
Mr.Koo is coming over to Mei Ling’s house to hand her the train ticket to join Kiu Wai and his family back to the Ton’s. He puts his head inside as the door is open.
Mr.Koo calls out: Teacher Ling, are you here? I am here to hand you your train ticket.
Mei Ling from inside: Yes, I am coming.
The moment Mei Ling appears in front of Mr.Koo, he gets dizzy and about to collapse. He recognizes her face. Isn’t she dead? as he’s thinking to herself. Mei Ling comes over to Mr.Koo: Are you alright sir? Mr.Koo tries to hold himself together: I am so sorry. I am fine. I just felt a little dizzy, probably from dehydration. Mei Ling: Come over to the table. I’ll pour you some water. It gets really hot around here. You have to be careful.
Mr.Koo comes over to the table and Mei Ling hands him a glass of water. Mr.Koo’s eyes are concentrated on Mei Ling with every movement of hers.
Mei Ling: Are you better? Mr.Koo hands Mei Ling her ticket: Here is your ticket Teacher Ling. The train will depart at 8 am sharp five days from now. Remember not to be late. Mei Ling: Thank you sir. Mr.Koo: Just call me Mr.Koo. Teacher Ling, can we take a walk outside to chat for a bit? Mei Ling: Sure. You probably need some fresh air too. Let’s stroll along the river nearby.
Mei Ling and Mr.Koo are chatting about their hometown while striding along the river. He is hoping that he can find out about her background and how she had crossed paths with Kiu Wai, and mainly how she is alive.
Mr.Koo: Teacher Ling, I hope you don’t mind me asking you this. Mei Ling: Go ahead Mr.Koo. I really enjoy talking to you. You really remind me of my father back at home. Mr.Koo: Then I shall continue. So many children need you here for your teaching, why do choose to teach just one boy? Mei Ling: To tell you the truth, I don’t know. There is something special about Wai Sun. I have been thinking for ten days to arrive to this decision.
Mr.Koo is stunned when he hears this. He is confident that Mei Ling is really the mother of Wai Sun. Of all the places in the world, how is it possible for her to unite with her own flesh and blood? He is very confused with so many questions of how and why in his head. But how should he stop her from coming back with them? What right does he have?
Mr.Koo: Is Wai Sun that special that you have to give up your dreams here? Mei Ling: Mr.Koo, you have no idea what my dream is. Wai Sun is part of the reason. The reason is my parents. I haven’t seen them in a long time. I think it’s about time I come home to see them. Mr.Koo with another shocking look on his face: Wait the minute, is your father Teacher Yung in the village closeby our province? Mei Ling smiles: Yes, he’s my father. How do you know him? Mr.Koo: My granddaughter is his favorite student. She lives next door to him. She comes over to his house almost everyday. Mei Ling: Really? What’s her name and how old is she? Mr.Koo hesitates but continues: Her name is Hoi Mei and she’s six years old. Mei Ling has a big grin on her face: Very nice name. I really like it. Her name is my middle name.
Mr.Koo just realizes this. He thinks to himself: Is it fate?
Mr.Koo: Thank you Teacher Ling. Mei Ling: Oh, I will get to meet her once I get back home. Mr.Koo: Yes you will.
Five days later in Luk Hip Province…………
Mei Ling tells Mr.Koo to stop the horse carriage because she wants to spend sometime at home with her parents before coming to work at the Ton’s. Mei Ling then jumps down from the carriage and walks over to Kiu Wai’s.
Kiu Wai is nervous when he sees Mei Ling gets down and comes over to say something to him. He is afraid that she’s changing her mind.
Mei Ling comes over and informs: Mr. and Mrs.Ton, I hope you don’t mind that I visit home for a couple of days first. I really miss my parents. I haven’t seen them in years. I hope you understand. Mei Chun quickly responds: Don’t worry Teacher Ling. Take your time and come back in a couple of days.
Kiu Wai is beginning to miss Mei Ling the moment he hears this.
Kiu Wai: Teacher Ling…… Mei Ling: Yes Mr.Ton? Kiu Wai: Take care. We hope to see you soon.
Mei Ling understands exactly what’s in his heart. She can see it in his eyes. His sadness is apparent, but only obvious to Mei Ling.
Mei Ling: I’ll see the three of you in a couple of days.
Kiu Wai is still looking back at Mei Ling while his carriage is taking off. Mei Chun has not been paying any attention to Kiu Wai’s actions to Mei Ling because she is all wrapped up with Wai Sun. Mei Ling waves a good bye and she walks home to her house.
Mei Ling approaches her house with excitement and calls out for her parents. She can hear their gigglings inside the house. It’s not just her parents’, but also a little girl’s.
Mei Ling enters the house and sees her parents having dinner with a little girl.
Mei Ling comes over and hugs her parents. Her parents receive her with shock and happy tears.
Father cries: Mei Ling, we’ve missed you so much. Mother sobs on Mei Ling’s shoulder: I am so sorry that you had to be away for so long.
Mei Ling smiles and assures her parents that she’s home for a long time. She then shifts her attention on the little girl.
Mei Ling to her father: Who is she? Father: Oh, I forgot to introduce to you. We’re so excited here that we forgot about you Hoi Mei.
Hoi Mei smiles at Mei Ling: I am Hoi Mei. You must Teacher Ling right? Mei Ling smiles back and comes over to Hoi Mei: You are a very polite and sweet girl. I’ve heard about you from your grandfather. Hoi Mei smiles with pride: Really? My grandfather talked to you about me? Mei Ling: Yes.
Mei Ling then notices something very special about Hoi Mei’s eyes. They’re just like……….just like Mei Ling’s, very round, big, and beautiful.
Mei Ling: Hoi Mei, you have the most beautiful eyes. Hoi Mei shyly responds: Thank you Teacher Ling. Teacher Yung and Mrs.Yung always say that about my eyes.
Mother: Yes, Mei Ling. She really reminds us of you. Her beautiful eyes are just like yours. Father: We’re very lonely here without you. Luckily Hoi Mei comes over to visit us everyday. She’s also my number one student. Mei Ling turning to Hoi Mei: I am so happy to hear that. Thank you Hoi Mei for keeping my parents companied in my absence. It really means a lot to them.
Mei Ling suddenly bursts out in tears and holds Hoi Mei. Hoi Mei responds back by holding Mei Ling. Both of them are holding each other crying.
Father: Aw, look at both of you, so sweet to each other. Mother: You both are so much alike.
Mei Ling wipes her tears and looks up to her parents while her arm is still around Hoi Mei: Father and Mother, please don’t be sad any more. I’ll try to be here as long as I can.
Hoi Mei: Oops, I have to go home now. Good by Teacher Yung, Mrs.Yung, and Teacher Ling. Mei Ling: Good-bye darling. I’ll see you tomorrow. After Hoi Mei leaves, Mei Ling’s parents immediately ask her the question they’ve been waiting for an answer in a long time.
Both of her parents ask her at the same time: Have you found the twins?

Chapter 32
Everyday Kiu Wai has been waiting anxiously for Mei Ling to come. He purposely leaves work early to come home to wait for her arrival. The longer he doesn’t see her, the more anxious he gets.
On the fifth evening, seeing that she hasn’t shown up yet, he decides to come to her house to see how she is doing. Mei Ling stands right in front of the main entrance as he opens the doors. Kiu Wai’s eyes show tremendous excitement upon seeing her face as she looks deeply into his eyes. He is about to hold her in his arms until……….
Mei Ling greets Kiu Wai: Mr.Ton, I am here to start my job. Sorry if I made your family wait for me too long. Hope you all understand my situation. Kiu Wai drops his grin and holds himself back: Mei Ling… Mei Ling interrupts him: Mr.Ton, I am here only as Wai Sun’s teacher. Please don’t make it difficult for me.
For Mei Ling, seeing Kiu Wai from a distance is good enough. All she knows is that seeing him brings happiness and smiles to her face. She doesn’t expect much from her new situation here.
Although her heart is yearning for his attention, his love, and his embrace, she is reminding herself that he does not belong to her. She has accepted her ill fate in love and in life.
Kiu Wai: I am sorry……Teacher Ling. I hope you understand me and my selfishness. Mei Ling smiles, hiding her anguish: What selfishness? You’re a great father. I admire fathers like you, putting your child as a priority. Kiu Wai, penetrating deeply in Mei Ling’s shining eyes: You need to understand, I can’t stand not seeing you, not for a day, a minute, or a second.
Mei is thrilled with happiness as she hears this. This is more than what she has expected to hear. However, she has to act appropriately as an employee of the Ton’s. If anyone hears this, Kiu Wai will have a very difficult time with the Ton’s. For his sake, she has to keep a distance from him.
Mei Ling quickly hides the smile of her heart, immediately rolls her eyes and exclaims: Mr.Ton! You have becareful with what you’re saying here. If you talk like this, I will leave!
Mei Ling turns around and about to walk away. Kiu Wai grabs her back with her arm. Kiu Wai cannot see her face, but she has a big smile. Mei Ling quickly removes the smile, turns around and looks up at Kiu Wai with pretentious anger. This is the first time that Kiu Wai sees Mei Ling angry. Somehow, Kiu Wai is even more attracted to her. Her anger is so mesmerizing compared to Mei Chun’s, which only drives Kiu Wai further away. But Mei Ling’s……..it makes Kiu Wai’s head spins with fascination. His knees are weak under the spell of her beautiful angry eyes.
Kiu Wai lets go of her arm and begs: Please Teacher Ling. I promise I won’t talk like that anymore. I’ll do whatever you say as long as you agree to stay here. Mei Ling tries to be firm: Good, I hope this is the last time I hear such nonsense like that. Kiu Wai smiles with relief: I promise. Come on, let me take your luggage. Wai Sun has been waiting for you. Everyone is in the garden having tea, please join us.
Mei Ling follows Kiu Wai as he carries her luggage and make their way to the garden.
Wai Sun immediately runs to Mei Ling and gives her a big hug. Mei Chun comes over to greet Mei Ling. At the same time, Mrs.Ton comes out to see Wai Sun’s new teacher that Mei Chun has been bragging about as Miss Yin follows her from behind.
Mei Chun turns to Mrs.Ton: Mother, are you alright? Miss Yin: Mrs.Ton, oh no!
Mrs.Ton faints at the sight of Mei Ling.
Mei Chun and Kiu Wai run over to attend her mother. Mei Ling follows Mei Chun and tries to find out what’s happening with Mrs.Ton.
Mrs.Ton is lying on the ground with her head supported by Miss Yin’s hands. Miss Yin looks up at Mei Ling and is also in shock with fear.
Miss Yin panickedly asks Kiu Wai while staring at Mei Ling: Mr.Ton, please help me carry Mrs.Ton inside her room. She is still breathing. She is fine. I think she is just exhausted from overwork. Everyone can just stay here.
Kiu Wai carries his mother-in-law inside her room. As she slowly regains her consciousness, she tells Kiu Wai that she is fine and asks Kiu Wai to leave the room.
Mrs.Ton asks Miss Yin: Did you see what I just saw? Miss Yin nervously answers: Yes. Mrs.Ton: Is she a ghost? Is she coming back to haunt us? Miss Yin: She is not a ghost. She’s Wai Sun’s new teacher. Mrs.Ton: She’s still alive? I thought this girl is dead? Miss Yin: That’s what we were told by Tat Wah. Mrs.Ton: I want to see him Miss Yin. Please send him a telegraph and ask him to come here to answer my question. I didn’t pay him for this kind of shocking result. Miss Yin: Yes, maam. In the meantime, please act normal so that no one will suspect anything alright. Mrs.Ton: Thank you for reminding me. I have to get to the bottom of this story. Don’t worry.
Kiu Wai comes back out and informs everyone that Mrs.Ton is fine. Mei Ling is relieved that her presence does not cause any misfortune.
Wah Sin approaches Mei Ling and shakes her hands: Hi Teacher Ling. I am Wah Sin, Mei Chun’s cousin. I’ve heard so much about you already. I am very thrilled that we have a young teacher like you here. Mei Ling: What a sweet talker you are Miss. Thank you for the nice compliments. I am not young anymore you know. Wah Sin: You still look so young. Call me Wah Sin. Mei Ling: Wah Sin? Wah Sin: Yes, that sounds better. I am glad that you’re here to keep me company. I am like a bird in a cage. No one talks to me except for Wai Sun. Mei Ling: Really? Well I will be happy to be your friend. Wah Sin, with excitement turns to Kiu Wai and Mei Chun: Thank you both of you for bringing me a friend. Kiu Wai is happy to see that Wah Sin likes Mei Ling and that she can give Mei Ling her friendship and company.
Wah Sin: Where’s her room Mei Chun? Mei Chun: Teacher Ling, follow me. Kiu Wai, can you take her luggage and follow us?
Mei Chun goes through the garden and stops at a little house surrounded by lots of flowers and a little koi pond. Mei Ling is very surprised to see such a pretty setting and arrangement they have for her.
Mei Chun to Mei Ling: Is this alright? I hope you will be comfortable here without anyone surrounding you so that you can have some peace after the teachings. Mei Ling graciously accepts: This more than I can ask for. It’s so beautiful. Thank you. Mei Chun: Oh don’t thank me. Thank Kiu Wai. Mei Ling looks at Kiu Wai: Oh? Kiu Wai: I’ve convinced Miss Yin to move to another room. Her new place is bigger than this one, so she agreed. Mei Ling smiles with contentment: Thank you Mr.Ton. Kiu Wai with a sweet smile for Mei Ling: You’re welcome Teacher Ling. Anything to keep you here, for Wai Sun that is.

Chapter 33
Wai Sun improves tremendously over the next few weeks. Everyone can see the apparent changes in him. He is no longer a rude obnoxious little boy. Instead, he has become a polite and obedient big boy.
Most of his time is spent with Mei Ling, learning math, calligraphy, history, poetry, science, and art. Besides from the serious learning, Mei Ling and Wai Sun also spend time everyday playing outdoor. They would walk to the rivers, lakes, and often have picnics just by themselves. They chase after grasshoppers, ladybugs, and butterflies.
Over the past few years, Wai Sun was only spoiled but not disciplined the right way. He has been deprived of real love and intellectual stimulations, which is exactly what Mei Ling is providing. As a result of this, Wai Sun has a lot of respect and love for Mei Ling. Their bond is stronger by the day.
Wai Sun has asked for Mei Ling to join them for family dinner everynight. Mrs.Ton has no choice but to yield to Wai Sun.
In the beginning, Mei Ling was very uncomfortable with this idea, having dinner in the same table with Kiu Wai and his wife together. But because Wai Sun has insisted, Mei Ling too gives in. On the other hand, Kiu Wai is very happy because this is the only time in a day where he gets to be in her vicinity for more than five minutes. He can actually see her without having to make any excuse.
During every dinner, Wai Sun sits between Mei Ling and Mei Chun. Wah Sin sits next to Mei Ling, and next to Mei Chun is Kiu Wai. Kiu Wai would take this opportunity during dinner to glance at Mei Ling. And of course, Mei Ling always tries to avoid having eye contact without Kiu Wai. Though she doesn’t look at him, but she can sense his gazes at her. This is about the closest as they get.
Kiu Wai is keeping a distance from Mei Ling like she has requested. If they do have any word exchange, they are quite formal.
It kills Kiu Wai not being able to be close to Mei Ling to share his feelings and thoughts. It even kills him more not being able to hold her. There are thousand times when he feels like just taking into his arms and run away with together. Of course, this is only his wish.
Everynight before he goes to back to his room for bedtime, he would stop in the garden and just look into Mei Ling’s room. He takes a deep breath in to feel her presence near him. After he sees her light blow out, then he walks to his room.
One evening after dinner, Mei Ling and Wai Sun ask Wah Sin to join them in the courtyard to enjoy the moon and feed the koi in the pond. Wah Sin happily accepts and invites Mei Chun and Kiu Wai also. Mei Chun declines and goes back to her room. And Kiu Wai……. At the courtyard, Wai Sun and Kiu Wai are having fun feeding the koi fish. Mei Ling and Wah Sin are sitting on the rocks right next to Kiu Wai. Although Kiu Wai is having fun with his son, he’s also paying attention to what Mei Ling is saying.
Wah Sin: Teacher Ling, you’ve been here for a while, but I don’t hear if you have a husband or not. Mei Ling: I am not married Wah Sin. Wah Sin: Do you have a loved one?
Mei Ling ponders on this question. Who is it that she really love? Does she love both? Both give her the exact same feeling. There is no communication between Kiu Wai and her right now, but the love still grows and is stronger. She is very confused. Kiu Wai looks over to Mei Ling and curious of her answer.
Mei Ling smiles and replies: Yes, I do have a lover. Wah Sin: Really? Who is he? Do I get to meet him? Mei Ling shakes her head and smiles: No. I don’t know where he is.
Kiu Wai’s expression has changed. All of a sudden he feels very sad and disappointed. He thinks to himself, why is he disappointed? He has no right to be. He remembers back that Mei Ling is still in love with her Lover and that she is still searching for him. If anything, Kiu Wai is only the second person who comes into her life. And besides, he’s a married man who has no right to feel disappointed at whom she loves.
Mei Ling looks over at Kiu Wai and can see his sad eyes. She knows exactly how he’s feeling. She turns back to Wah Sin to alleviate the focus on her.
Mei Ling: Wah Sin, do you have a boyfriend? Wah Sin shyly looks onto the ground and smiles: Yes, but don’t tell my grandma or my parents. I don’t think they would like it. Mei Ling: Don’t worry, I won’t. You’re old enough to get married already. Why wouldn’t they like it? Wah Sin: It’s not that, I just don’t think that they would like him. Mei Ling: Who is he? Wah Sin: I will introduce him to you when he comes here.
After a few minutes, Wah Sin excuse herself to go back to her room. When Wah Sin walks away, the maid comes over and takes Wai Sun to go wash up. So that leaves Mei Ling alone with Kiu Wai.
Both are looking at each other in silence and Mei Ling then looks away.
Mei Ling breaks the silence: Mr.Ton, it’s getting late. Excuse me, I have to head back to my room.
Mei Ling looks down and heads towards her cottage. All of a sudden a very strong wind dash by and blows out the lights along her path. It’s pitch black. Mei Ling is getting a little nervous because of her history with darkness. Then, the flashbacks of her lover making love to her in the wooden house, and Kiu Wai holding her in the cave, come rushing into her head like waves in the ocean. Overwhelmed with these flashbacks, she is just frozen, standing there without feeling fear.
As she’s still standing there in the dark, a hand grabs her arm. Her heart beats so fast because she knows whose hand it is.
Kiu Wai: Mei Ling, are you alright? I am here, you don’t have to be afraid of the darkness.
Mei Ling is so touched when she hears this. Kiu Wai and Mei Ling irresistably embrace each other.
Mei Ling: Because of you, I am no longer afraid of the darkness. Because of you, I no longer have fear.

Chapter 34
Kiu Wai pulls Mei Ling’s face away from his chest, leans down and about to kiss her lips until……………..
“Teacher Ling! Teacher Ling!”, Mr.Koo’s calling pulls Mei Ling from Kiu Wai’s arms.
Mei Ling looks down and apologizes: I am so sorry. Kiu Wai speaks softly: Mei Ling……
Mr.Koo runs over to Kiu Wai and Mei Ling, and is a little concerned when he sees the two people are standing quite close to each other. He can’t believe that it’s actually their hands that he placed them together while blindfolded. And now, they’re still attracted to each other in person somehow, but not realizing their true identities. This completely blows Mr.Koo’s mind away. He feels that this is a very unique bond and love that Kiu Wai and Mei Ling are sharing. But, this is not his place to speak of the truth or his opinion.
Mr.Koo to Kiu Wai and Mei Ling: Teacher Ling, someone is here to see you. Mei Ling: Me? Mr.Koo: Yes, follow me.
Kiu Wai is curious about this visitor so he tags along with them.
When they all enter the living room, Tat Wah turns around from his talk with Miss Yin. Kiu Wai, Mei Ling, and Tat Wah are all surprise when Tat Wah turns around and greets them. Tat Wah is very shocked at the sight of Mei Ling and Kiu Wai together. Never in his dream that they would have the chance to unite like this. He has a very concerned look as he walks over to Mei Ling.
Tat Wah: Mei Ling, why are you here? Kiu Wai, with a shocking look, cuts in before Mei Ling answers: Teacher Ling, you know Mr.Yam here? Mei Ling also has a shock look on her face: Yes, Tat Wah is my dear friend from Guangzhou. Wait, you know Tat Wah too? Tat Wah then cuts in: I know the Ton Family Mei Ling. I dealt business with them couple years ago and that’s when I met Kiu Wai. Mei Ling, I got your telegraph about Sister Fong’s death. I went to Fengshan to pay respect and to look for you but Sui Fai told me that you’re here at the Ton’s. What are you doing here? Mei Ling: I am Wai Sun’s teacher.
Tat Wah is even more surprised that Mei Ling now is Wai Sun’s teacher.
Tat Wah: What? You’re Wai Sun’s teacher? Mei Ling: Yes, what’s wrong with that? Tat Wah, tries to play it down: Oh nothing, I thought you would want to be a village teacher, not a teacher here. Mei Ling: Well, things are very unpredictable and I have no control over my destiny. All I know is that I really adore Wai Sun and I want to help him. Kiu Wai: Tat Wah, can I discuss something with you before you leave tonight? I will leave you both alone for now. I will be in the library waiting for you. Tat Wah: Sure, I will drop by. Mei Ling and I have a lot of things to catch up with.
Kiu Wai then leaves the room and head to the library with full of questions in his head. How does Tat Wah know Mei Ling? Why is he here now? What intention does he have? Is his mother-in-law up to something now?
Kiu Wai is actually feeling a little jealous of the close friendship between Mei Ling and Tat Wah, and especially seeing both of them smiling and talking to each other when he turns around to look. Are they friends or more than friends? Why is Tat Wah involved in the 2 persons he loves the most?
Mei Ling: Why are you here Tat Wah? Tat Wah: I have to take care of some unfinished business here, but mainly to see you. Mei Ling: Me? I thought you forgot about me already. We haven’t seen each other in a long time. Tat Wah: Yes, I know that Mei Ling. Believe or not, I always think about you. Mei Ling giggles: You are really funny Tat Wah. You sound as if we’re lovers. Tat Wah: I’m serious Mei Ling. Mei Ling tries to change the subject: How long are you staying here for and where are you staying at? Tat Wah: I’m staying at a motel nearby, and I’m staying as long as it takes. Why don’t you go ahead and go rest. I will come back tomorrow to see you again. Mei Ling: Yes, that would be nice. We have a lot of things to talk about. Tat Wah: We sure do.
Tat Wah walks over to the library to meet Kiu Wai after Mei Ling heads to her room. Kiu Wai: You’re here. It’s been a long time Tat Wah. Tat Wah: Yes, it’s been six years Kiu Wai. Kiu Wai: Why are you here and what do you want? Tat Wah: I am here for Mei Ling. I want to see her. Kiu Wai: Now how do you know her also? Tat Wah: Why am I getting this feeling that you’re a little jealous Mr.Ton? You’re married, remember? Kiu Wai raises his voice: Just answer me! Tat Wah: I know her from Yim Fong. Is this what you want to talk to me about? About Mei Ling? Kiu Wai: No. I want to ask you about HER. Tat Wah: You know that she’s dead already. What do you want to know? Kiu Wai looks straight in Tat Wah’s eyes with a firm voice: I want to know who she was. I want to know her name! I want to honor her the appropriate way. How can I pray for her soul when I don’t even know what her name is? Tat Wah: I am sorry Kiu Wai. I can’t give you this information. Mrs.Ton will be very upset at me.
Miss Yin interrupts the conversation between Kiu Wai and Tat Wah.
Miss Yin to Tat Wah: Mrs.Ton wants a few words with you in her room now. Tat Wah to Kiu Wai: I am sorry I am not able to provide you what you need. I will see you tomorrow Mr.Ton.
Kiu Wai is more frustrated than ever…., not knowing his LOVER’s name, not knowing the truth, and not being able to be close to Mei Ling. The presence of Tat Wah brings Kiu Wai many memories and sadness. He needs Mei Ling more than ever at this moment.
Miss Yin escorts Tat Wah into Mrs.Ton’s room.
Mrs.Ton: You’re here to answer me some questions Mr.Yam. I demand the truth. Why did you claim that she was dead? Tat Wah: We thought that she was dead. Mrs.Ton: You thought? Tat Wah: We chased her down the mountain and saw her slipping down the slope. Mrs.Ton: Did you recover her body? Tat Wah: No, we never found the body. We assumed that she was dead. Mrs.Ton: You never saw the body and you assumed that she was dead? I can’t believe this. No wonder she’s here to take revenge. Tat Wah: Take it easy Mrs.Ton. She doesn’t know anything. Just leave it alone alright? Don’t dig up anymore for your family’s sake. Mrs.Ton: I have no choice at this moment, but I will keep my eyes on her. If she dares to attempt to take my grandson away, she will regret.
Tat Wah is concerned for Mei Ling’s presence in the Ton Family. He vows to do whatever it takes to protect her from the dangers coming ahead for he cannot bear to see her being hurt again. Her pain of six years ago is still his pain today.

Chapter 35
That night, the fear of losing Mei Ling keeps Kiu Wai from falling asleep. Who can possibly take Mei Ling away from him? His mother-in-law? Mei Chun? Or Tat Wah? And why is he fearful when nothing has happened yet? Is he overworried?
He tosses and turns as the thoughts of not having Mei Ling in his life flickers in his mind. Mei Chun, half-asleep, moves closer to him and places her head on his chest. However, Kiu Wai is numb toward her touch. Although his body is right next to Mei Chun, his heart and his thoughts are with Mei Ling.
Kiu Wai wakes up early because he is anxious to see Mei Ling already. She usually gets up early and reads a book in the garden. Because he knows this, he purposely walks toward the garden just to have a glimpse at her. To his surprise, Tat Wah is already there……talking and giggling with Mei Ling at the koi pond. Kiu Wai is just frozen. His heart is sinking. He doesn’t know what to do, whether to come over to greet them or walk away silently.
Before he had a chance to decide, Mei Chun walks up from behind him and taps him on his shoulder.
Kiu Wai turns around: Oh Mei Chun. Why are you up so early? Mei Chun: It’s a beautiful morning. Sounds of bird chirpings wake me up. What are you looking at?
Mei Chun turns to the direction where Kiu Wai was focusing heavily on.
Mei Chun: Oh look, it’s Tat Wah! What’s he doing here? Let’s go over to greet him.
Mei Chun grabs Kiu Wai’s hand and walks over to Mei Ling and Tat Wah.
Mei Ling looks up and sees Kiu Wai and Mei Chun approaching them hand in hand. This sight makes her feel very uncomfortable as she thinks about the previous night, how she was in Kiu Wai’s arms. Mei Ling senses a sharp pain in her heart to see Kiu Wai being close to his wife. Of course, Mei Ling has no right to feel any jealousy because what role does she have in his life? She is neither his wife nor his mistress.
Mei Ling tries to hide her uneasiness by being extremely friendly with Tat Wah.
Mei Ling smiles to Tat Wah: Look Tat Wah, the lovely couple is here to greet you. Tat Wah looks up to Kiu Wai and Mei Chun: Indeed, a very lovely, happy couple. Mr. and Mrs.Ton, good morning.
Kiu Wai is noticing his rising jealousy as he is in the presence of Mei Ling and Tat Wah. He cannot control his feelings.
Mei Chun: Mr.Yam, what a surprise to see you here. Welcome to our home. Tat Wah: Thank you Mrs.Ton. I was actually here last night. Mr.Ton didn’t tell you? Mei Chun: No, I was sleeping already when he turned in.
Kiu Wai and Mei Ling discreetly exchanging glances as Tat Wah and Mei Chun are conversing to each other. Mei Ling then avoids having direct eye contact with Kiu Wai as he keeps staring into her eyes. The longer Kiu Wai stares, the more he’s lost in them.
Mei Chun: Kiu Wai, Kiu Wai. Kiu Wai then shakes up from his lost in Mei Ling’s eyes: I am sorry Mei Chun. What did you say? Mei Chun: Are you alright this morning Kiu Wai? You don’t seem to be all there. Maybe you shouldn’t go to work. Kiu Wai: It’s alright Mei Chun. I am just a little tired from long hours at work. Mei Chun: Anyway, I was asking Mr.Yam to join us for the Moon Festival Celebration in a couple of days. Kiu Wai forces a smile on his face: That sounds great. We will be happy to have you join us Tat Wah. Tat Wah: I will happily accept your invitation, only if this beautiful teacher will be invited also. Mei Chun: Of course. Wai Sun would not have fun without Teacher Ling here. Does that mean yes? Tat Wah: Yes, thank you.
Somehow Tat Wah’s treatment to Mei Ling angers Kiu Wai more by the minute. His blood is beginning to boil.
Kiu Wai: Tat Wah, please make yourself a home. I have to head to work. Mei Chun: I will walk you out.
Mei Ling can see the jealousy in Kiu Wai’s eyes and the anger in his tone. Only Mei Ling can sense this and see through him.
As Mei Chun walks Kiu Wai out the door……..
Mei Chun: Mei Ling is single and Mr.Yam is too I hope. Don’t you think they look very good together? Kiu Wai is a little angry: Are you trying to be a matchmaker? Mei Chun: I just think that they would make a nice couple. Kiu Wai: Please Mei Chun, let them take care of themselves. Don’t worry for them. They can handle it on their own. I don’t think they would need your help. Mei Chun: It’s just a thought.
On Moon Festival at the Ton’s…………
The courtyard and the garden are decorated with lanterns. The servants and maids are running around servicing the guests with foods and drinks. It’s the biggest celebration since Mr.Ton’s birthday 8 years ago.
Wai Sun is running around Kiu Wai and Mei Chun with his lantern. Kiu Wai is anxious because he has not yet seen Mei Ling coming out for the celebration.
Tat Wah then enters the garden with two lanterns. Wai Sun comes over to him and he hands him one. Tat Wah comes over to Kiu Wai.
Kiu Wai: Thank you for the lantern Tat Wah. Whose is the second lantern for? Tat Wah: I think you know who. Where is she? Kiu Wai: I haven’t seen her yet.
Kiu Wai sees Wah Sin approaching them, so he stops her and asks where Mei Ling is.
Wah Sin: Oh, I haven’t seen her all afternoon. Oh, look there she is.
Both Kiu Wai and Tat Wah look over to the direction that Wah Sin is pointing. Both men are stunned at Mei Ling’s appearance. It's not the usual, simple-dressed Mei Ling they're looking at, it's a goddess.

Chapter 36
Her breath-taking beauty is taking their breath away. Mei Ling’s femine figure is traced by a long light peach silk skirt with a matching silk top. Her long, silky hair left lose and hangs down to her waist. Her luscious lips are glistened with the shimmering red lipstick. Her eyes are more beautiful than ever with lights from lanterns spark in her pupils, like radiance of diamonds.
This is the first time ever that Mei Ling applies make-up and dressed in a skirt. And to Kiu Wai, this is his first time he sees her beautiful black hair down.
Kiu Wai and Tat Wah are speechless with their jaws dropped.
Wah Sin runs over to Mei Ling and takes her hands, and scans her from head to toes.
Wah Sin: Wow, look at you. Are you our Teacher Ling? I can’t believe it.
Mei Ling shyly smiles and looks down as she knows that most eyes are on her, especially Kiu Wai’s.
Tat Wah hands Mei Ling the lantern: This beautiful lantern is for a beautiful lady. Mei Ling: Thank you Tat Wah.
Wai Sun runs over and grabs Mei Ling’s hand: Teacher Ling, you are so beautiful. I’ve never seen you like this before. Let’s play together with our lanterns. Mei Ling: Thank you Wai Sun for saying that I’m beautiful. Sure, I’m all yours tonight Wai Sun.
Mei Ling takes Wai Sun’s hand as Tat Wah follows them.
Kiu Wai is still stunned and frozen by Mei Ling’s beauty. She looks exactly like how he had envisioned his Lover looked like. He is more attracted to her than ever. To Kiu Wai, Mei Ling has always been a beautiful woman. But tonight, she represents class, elegance, and exquisteness.
A little girl’s voice calls out: Teacher Ling! Teacher Ling!
Hoi Mei runs over to Mei Ling with Mr.Koo following behind.
Mei Ling smiles: Hoi Mei! You’re here. Hoi Mei: My grandfather brings me here to celebrate Moon Festival. Mei Ling: I am so happy that you’re here.
Mei Ling hands her the lantern that Tat Wah had given to her.
Mei Ling: This is for you. Hoi Mei: Thank you Teacher Ling. Mr.Koo: Teacher Ling, I decided to take her here so that she can have some fun with you and Wai Sun. Mei Ling: Oh thank you Mr.Koo.
Mei Ling turns to Wai Sun: Wai Sun, here is a new friend for you. Her name is Hoi Mei. Wai Sun: Hi Hoi Mei. Come with me, I’ll show you around. Would you like to see the koi in the pond?
Hoi Mei looks at her grandfather for approval. Mr.Koo nods and the two children take off with their lanterns.
At this moment, Kiu Wai’s attention is being divided by Hoi Mei and Mei Ling. He can’t believe what he just saw…….a little girl who is a mirror-image of Mei Ling.
Kiu Wai walks over to Mei Ling and Mr.Koo: Is that your grandaughter Mr.Koo? Mr.Koo: Yes she is. Kiu Wai: It’s funny, I never knew that you have a grandaugther this age. Mr.Koo: No need to mention Mr.Ton. Kiu Wai jokingly replies: If I didn’t know any better, I would’ve thought that she’s Mei Ling’s daughter.
Kiu Wai turns to Mei Ling and looks straight into her eyes and softly speak: She has your eyes Teacher Ling.
Mei Ling suddenly sense this overwhelming sensation and looks down to suppress it.
Tat Wah: Yes, I feel the same way too. Mei Ling: It’s strange how both of you say that she looks like me. My parents say the same thing.
Mei Chun starts to notice the attention that Kiu Wai is giving to Mei Ling, and especially the way he looks at her when she showed up. She comes over and puts her arm in his.
Mei Chun: She is very cute Mr.Koo. I’m glad Wai Sun has a new friend. Kiu Wai: Please bring her here more often Mr.Koo. I would love for Wai Sun to play with her. He needs someone to play with at his age. Mr.Koo: Yes, Mr.Ton. I will try.
Tat Wah clues Mei Ling that he wants to spend some time alone with her.
Tat Wah to everyone: Excuse me, I would like to take Mei Ling for a little walk.
Mei Ling then walks off with Tat Wah into the courtyard. They settle down onto a bench. Tat Wah slowly moves closer to Mei Ling. From a distance Kiu Wai can see how Tat Wah is making his moves on Mei Ling.
Mei Chun: Look Kiu Wai. They’re such a cute couple. Tat Wah is so caring to Mei Ling. Kiu Wai does not reply, but still focusing on their positions. Mei Chun: Kiu Wai, let’s go talk to the guests.
Mei Chun steers Kiu Wai away from looking at Mei Ling. She is starting to feel jealous of Mei Ling and Mei Ling’s stunning beauty. She’s been used to getting all the attention. But tonight, all the attention is on Mei Ling. The fact that Kiu Wai is paying more attention to Mei Ling than usual, is posing a threat for Mei Chun.
Tat Wah: You look really beautiful tonight Mei Ling. Mei Ling: You really know how to joke around with me. Tat Wah: You never take anything I say seriously do you? Mei Ling: Sometimes, but not all the time. Tat Wah: You have to take me more serious Mei Ling.
Tat Wah takes Mei Ling’s hands and hold them firmly in his. His eyes are staring right in hers. His look is more serious.
Tat Wah: Marry me Mei Ling.
Mei Ling still thinks it’s a joke from Tat Wah.
Mei Ling giggles: What a funny joke. Tat Wah remains serious without a smile: It’s not a joke Mei Ling.
Mei Ling then realizes that he’s not joking.
Tat Wah: I want to marry you and spend the rest of my life taking care of you Mei Ling. Mei Ling is shocked: Tat Wah, marriage is a very important thing. How can you throw it out just like that? Tat Wah: I didn’t just throw it out like that. It’s been on my mind for the last six years. I have been working hard, turning my life around, making good money to be able to start a family with you. Mei Ling is more shocked than ever: Why would you want to marry someone like me? You witnessed my pregnancy. I am not a pure girl who still is a virgin. I am a woman who has a complicated history. Tat Wah: I don’t care about your history. All I care is you. You are the one who turned my life around. I used to be a very bad person. But I no longer am. To tell you the truth, I am mainly here for you. I have built my success using my clean hands. I am now ready to take care of you. You don’t have to stay at Ton’s anymore. We can go far away to start a family of our own.
Mei Ling is very confused, doesn’t know what to think. She stands up, leans against the tree, and closes her eyes. Tat Wah gets up and put his face close to Mei Ling’s.
Tat Wah: I know that this is a lot for you to think about. I am not pressuring you. Think about it and give me an answer when you’re ready. I will wait patiently for you. Mei Ling: Thank you Tat Wah.

Chapter 37
The courtyard and the garden are getting quiet. The guests are leaving one by one as the celebration slowly ends.
Mei Ling is just sitting on the bench next to her cottage staring at the full moon with full of thoughts…..thoughts of her lover and the twins, Kiu Wai, and now Tat Wah. She is torn in many directions. She is trying to imagine her future with Tat Wah, whether if this is the best path for her. Most women at her age already have older children, maybe this is the last chance for her if she wants to get married and start a family of her own instead of hanging on Kiu Wai’s without a future and happiness for herself. The thoughts of not being close to Kiu Wai forever, however is really devastating for her. As she is deep in her thoughts, a hand gently touches her shoulder. Mei Ling turns around and their eyes meet and penetrate without a blink. Kiu Wai: I am glad I can have some moment alone with you here.
Kiu Wai sits down next to her, with his eyes still fixated on hers.
Kiu Wai: You are really beautiful tonight. Mei Ling: Thank you Mr.Ton. Kiu Wai: Please don’t be formal to me. Mei Ling: Your wife may be looking for you. You should go back to her. Kiu Wai: I am not here to talk to you about her. I am here for you. Mei Ling: You are in no position to tell me this. What am I to you? Kiu Wai: My soulmate, and yes, you may think it’s wrong for me to talk you this way, but I don’t want to hold it inside any longer. You don’t know how much it has been killing me to be in your vicinity but I can’t be close to you.
Mei Ling gets up: Then I will go so you don’t have to feel this way.
Kiu Wai grabs her wrist and holds it tightly and holds her back. He pulls her back down next to him, holds her face with both of his hands. He immediately placed his lips on hers and kisses her passionately. Mei Ling reacts to his kiss and her heart, closes her eyes and surrenders to his kiss.
In this moment, both are experiencing ecstacy that they have not felt since 7 years ago in the wooden house. Kiu Wai places one hand on her back and the back of neck while kissing her. During these few minutes, Mei Ling cannot think of anything except for the feeling of the butterflies inside. Kiu Wai and Mei Ling are now in their own world, not thinking about Mei Chun, Tat Wah, or anyone else.
“Kiu Wai, Kiu Wai” Mei Chun’s voice is heard from a distance.
Mei Chun’s voice wakes Mei Ling from her kiss and opens her eyes. She then realizes that Kiu Wai’s lips are right on hers. She immediately pulls herself out from the liplock.
Mei Ling: I shouldn’t be doing this. I don’t want to hurt Mei Chun. She is looking for you. Kiu Wai: Mei Ling, I cannot be unfaithful to you. My heart belongs to you. Mei Ling: What about Mei Chun?
“Did I just hear my name?” Mei Chun approaches.
Mei Ling: Yes, we’re talking about you Mei Chun. I was telling Kiu Wai that you’re wonderful mother and wife and that he is very lucky to marry you. Kiu Wai: Mei Ling…. Mei Ling cuts in: I’ve always envied your relationship. You both are such a loving couple. Mei Chun smiles and feels somewhat less threatened by Mei Ling: Thank you Teacher Ling. I see that Tat Wah cares for you. You both make a very nice couple. Mei Ling: Well, we’ll see. I’m tired. I need to get up early tomorrow, so please excuse me. It’s very nice talking to you Mr.Ton. Like I’ve said, you’re a very lucky man to have a wife like Mei Chun.
Mei Ling takes off quickly before Kiu Wai has a chance to say anything. She closes the door right behind her, lean her back on the door and closes her eyes. She can’t believe what she has just done with Kiu Wai. It’s so wrong, but at the same time it feels so right. She is torn and confused.
Their magical kiss is engraved in their mind the rest of the night as they both try to sleep.

Chapter 38
Days and weeks after the unforgettable kiss shared between Mei Ling and Kiu Wai, Mei Ling has been trying every possible way to avoid Kiu Wai. She would have dinner on her own, separate from the Ton Family. She turns in earlier than normal, and does not hang out in the garden or courtyard. She comes home to her parents or goes out with Tat Wah on her days off.
Kiu Wai would try to find every opportunity to be in the same space with Mei Ling, but has been unsuccessful. Wai Sun, Wah Sin, or Tat Wah is always around her, making it very hard for him to be alone. Kiu Wai grows more frustrated, and missing her as the days go by.
Tat Wah and Mei Ling are happily chatting during their walk in the woods.
Tat Wah: Mei Ling, have you thought of my proposal to you on that Full Moon? Mei Ling drops her smile: Yes I have. Tat Wah with curiosity and hope: And? What’s your answer? Mei Ling with hesitation to answer: I don’t know what my answer is. Please give me more time. Tat Wah shows a little agitation: Time for what?
Mei Ling turns away. Tat Wah steps right in front of her and continues the discussion.
Tat Wah: What’s holding you back Mei Ling? Tell me the truth. I can tell something is holding you back from making this decision. Mei Ling: You know my history already. My wish is not fulfilled. I still need to find the father of my babies. I need to know where they are. Tat Wah: So it’s your lover who’s holding you back from making this decision. Is it your lover or is it Kiu Wai?
Mei Ling looks up at Tat Wah with shock. She turns away and refuses to answer. Tat Wah grabs her arm and forces her eyes to meet his.
Tat Wah: It’s Kiu Wai isn’t it?
Mei Ling shakes her arm off from Tat Wah’s grip and looks angry.
Tat Wah: Your eyes can’t lie to me Mei Ling. Don’t think that I’m blind. I can see your love for him. I see it everytime! Mei Ling: Yes, so what if it’s him!? Tat Wah: Why can’t you think for yourself once? Are you going to be a teacher in his family forever? What kind of future are you going to have? Don’t you think your existence has an impact on his marriage? Do you want to tear their family apart? Do you want to see Wai Sun growing up not having a father? Mei Ling covers her ears and starts to cry: I don’t know! I don’t know anything anymore! Tat Wah: Mei Ling, you have to face the reality. You cannot have Kiu Wai. He is a married man. You both will not have any future together. Think about the sacrifices he had made for his fellow villagers and family. Do you want all of his efforts go down drain?
Tat Wah gently wipes Mei Ling’s tears on her face.
Tat Wah speaks softly: I know that you love Kiu Wai, and I don’t mind. All I care is that you agree to let me take care of you for the rest of my life.
Mei Ling cries harder when she hears this.
Mei Ling: Please Tat Wah, I need to think. Tat Wah is growing impatient: What does it take for you to get on with your life? Please live for yourself. Stop living for them.
Tat Wah catches his breath and changes to a lower serious tone: Mei Ling, will it be better for you to know where the father of the babies is? Maybe that is what it takes for you to move on!
Mei Ling stops crying and looks at Tat Wah with full of curiosity.
Tat Wah: Will that satisfy you? Mei Ling: What do you mean? Tat Wah: You heard me. Don’t you want to know where or who he is?
Mei Ling is stunned when Tat Wah asks this question, as if he has a clue to her question she’s been wanting to find out for so long.
Mei Ling aks with aggressiveness: What are you talking about Tat Wah? What do you know about him? Where is he and how do you know? Tat Wah: You better be ready for the truth Mei Ling because I am going to reveal them to you right now, once and for all.

Chapter 39
Mei Ling opens her eyes large as Tat Wah is about to reveal what she’s been waiting to hear. She stares straight into his eyes like she’s demanding for answers.
Mei Ling: Tat Wah, who is he? Tat Wah raises his voice: Fine, since you are so persistent in finding him, I’m going to tell you who he is. You need to close this chapter in your life so that you can go on! The man who made love to you in that wooden house seven years ago is Kiu Wai!!! Kiu Wai! Kiu Wai! And the son that you both had together is Wai Sun!!! Are you satisfied now?!!!
These words are like lightning thunder striking Mei Ling. She closes her eyes, breathe deeply, and laughs.
Tat Wah: Why are you laughing? Mei Ling with a smirk smile: You’re lying. Tat Wah angrily asks: Tell me why would I make this up? Mei Ling: You want me to forget Kiu Wai!
Tat Wah angrily grabs Mei Ling arms and makes her leave with him.
Mei Ling: Where are you taking me? Tat Wah: You come with me. Since you don’t believe me, I’m going to show the proof.
Tat Wah takes Mei Ling back to his motel room. He has her sit on his bed.
Tat Wah orders: Sit there and don’t move! Mei Ling: What are you doing? Tat Wah: Close your eyes Mei Ling.
Mei Ling closes her eyes as she was told. Tat Wah walks over to the drawer of his desk and pulls the blindfold that he still keeps from seven years ago. He comes over to Mei Ling and ties it around her eyes.
The moment Mei Ling feels this blindfold, her heart races rapidly. The fear and memories start gushing into her mind.
Tat Wah takes out his cigarettes and starts to smoke.
Mei Ling starts to cry and trembles: The blindfold, the cigarrette smoke…….. you…..you…..who are you?
Tat Wah comes over to Mei Ling and unties her blindfold.
Tat Wah: I was the Big Brother.
Mei Ling is completely overwhelmed with the truth and the revelation of the identities she just has learned. She stands up and slaps Tat Wah on his face.
Mei Ling’s face is red with tears rolling down her face: You Bastard! You ruined my life! What did I ever do to you?!
Mei Ling breaks down and sobs uncontrollably as Tat Wah is still standing there waiting for his punishment.
Tat Wah: Go ahead and hit me again! I deserve it. At least it will make me feel better. I am so sorry Mei Ling. I know a thousand “sorrys” is not enough. Nothing will be enough to make up for my sins. I was a very bad person before. I’ve been living with full of guilts. You don’t have to forgive me if you don’t want to and I am not asking you for it. Mei Ling: Why are you telling me all of this? Why don’t you keep it to yourself like the past seven years? Tat Wah sheds his tears as he comes over and reaches out to Mei Ling: Because I love you. Mei Ling angrily asks: Love me? Since when? Tat Wah: Since I saw you standing up for yourself and for your mother with fire. I admired your defiance and strength. I have never met such a strong woman like you. I slowly fell in love with you while you were carrying the babies at Yim Fong’s. Mei Ling covers her face with her hands and continues to cry: Oh my God! How could I not see that it is Kiu Wai? He was in front of me all this time and I didn’t see it? Tat Wah, tell me, does he know that it’s me? Tat Wah: Don’t worry Mei Ling, he doesn’t know. Mei Ling: Who knows? Tat Wah: Mrs.Ton, Miss Yin, and Mr.Koo.
Tat Wah retells Mei Ling the whole story of how this drama was created and fills in all the missing pieces Mei Ling wants to know. Mei Ling sits there listening with continuous tears pouring down her face.
Tat Wah continues: Mei Ling, when I walked into that wooden house and saw you lay there lifelessly, I was so devastated. I thought that I lost you, and I would’ve never forgiven myself. You lost so much blood and passed out. I quickly carried you into my car to the hospital with Yim Fong and the babies. We saw your mother on the way and picked her up. You were unconscious for several days. When you woke up, I purposely disappeared so you wouldn’t know that it was me who was involved. Mei Ling: All this time, I thought you knew me from Yim Fong. And all this time I thought it was Yim Fong who saved my life, but it was you. Tat Wah: It doesn’t matter, I’m still a bastard to you. Never in my wild dreams that I would see you with Kiu Wai. What are the chances of you falling in love with the man who impregnant you 7 years ago? Is it fate or this world is so small? I was completely shocked and terrified when I learned that you’re at the Ton’s. Now you know why I discouraged you earlier from being with Kiu Wai. You will be in great danger, not just yourself, but Kiu Wai as well. Mei Ling: I wish I don’t know this painful truth. Tat Wah: I contemplated all the time whether I let you know the truth or not. I know that once I reveal to you who I am, I would have to accept the consequence of you not seeing me ever again. And you what? I am willing to take that chance because I love you honestly. You deserve to know the truth. I can’t let you go on living in deceptions.
Mei Ling wipes her flowing tears: You have no idea how much pain I was suffering, being separated from my babies. Wait the minute Tat Wah, Wai Sun is my son, then where is my daughter? Tat Wah: I heard that the baby was tossed into the river. Mei Chun did not want the baby girl, so Mrs.Ton ordered for the baby to be disposed? Mei Ling hysterically cries out loud: To be disposed? Oh my God! My baby girl! How could she kill my baby like that?
Mei Ling holds her head and bursts out her scream: My baby! My poor baby! I wish I was dead along with my daughter!
Tat Wah sees Mei Ling so much in pain, so he comes over and places his arm around her shoulder and consoles her.
Mei Ling: God, why did I do to deserve this pain? The man that I loved is the married man I am in love with, and Wai Sun……..my son! I can’t be with my own flesh and blood! And my daughter……she’s all alone in the river somewhere!
Tat Wah: I am so sorry Mei Ling. I know that this truth is very painful. No matter what, you have to accept it. Mei Ling, now you know everything. You can go ahead decide for yourself what you want to do. You are a very smart woman and I know that you will make the right decision for Wai Sun, Kiu Wai, and most of all, for yourself. Mei Ling, more than anything, I still want you to marry me. Both of us will leave this place and this ugly past behind us, and we can start our new lives together. I wont’ let anyone hurt you anymore.
Mei Ling wipes her tears and stands up: I need to be alone.
Mei Ling coldly walks out of the room without looking back at Tat Wah. All he can do is just stands there, feeling helpless and uncertain about their future together.

Chapter 40
Kiu Wai comes home earlier than usual. He walks through the courtyard and sees Wai Sun playing by himself.
Kiu Wai: Wai Sun, why are you playing out here? Why aren’t you with Teacher Ling? Wai Sun: I get to have a break. Kiu Wai: Says who? Wai Sun: Mother says so.
Mei Chun walks out and answers to Kiu Wai: I told him he can have a couple days of break. Kiu Wai: Why? Mei Chun: Teacher Ling’s not here. Kiu Wai with a surprise look: Where is she? Mei Chun: She sends a note couple of days ago asking for a few days off. Kiu Wai: What’s the reason? Is she sick? Is she alright? Mei Chun: The note did not explain any further.
Kiu Wai is worried that Mei Ling is not alright since the last few weeks she didn’t talk to him at all. Later that day, he decides to give her a visit at her parents’ house because that’s the only place he can think of.
ML’s father can vaguely remember Kiu Wai: Mr.Ton? Kiu Wai: Hello Mr.Yung. Yes, I’m Kiu Wai. I’m glad you remember me. Father: Please come on in. How can I help you? Kiu Wai: Is Mei Ling here? Father: Yes, she’s been here the past couple of days and left early this morning. Kiu Wai: Is she alright? Father: She didn’t really seem to be herself. She didn’t really talk much, which is pretty unusual of her. Other than that, she’s fine. Did she do something wrong at the Ton’s? Kiu Wai: No no, not at all. I’m just concerned about her. What time will she come back? Father: I am not sure if she will be back today or not. She left in a hurry this morning. I didn’t have a chance to talk to her. But you’re welcome to wait for her to see if she’ll be back. Kiu Wai: Thank you. I hope you don’t mind. Father: No not at all. Please make yourself a home. I have to get to my class right now. Can you please close the door after you leave? Kiu Wai: Yes, thank you Mr.Yung.
Kiu Wai wanders around the house after Mei Ling’s father leaves. Nothing has changed since his last visit here eight years ago. Oh how he wishes time were to go back…..he would take Mei Ling away to be his bride in his village and they would live happily ever after….. with a simple life.
He stops at a room, which he suspects to be Mei Ling’s. He puts his head in and looks around. He curiously enters her room. He stands in the middle of the room and scans around just to feel her existence. Suddenly, his eyes then stop at one picture on the wall. He comes closer to this picture……he remembers it……it’s a proposal letter from Kiu Wai to Mei Ling eight years ago. There it is……the picture he drew of his village. He has forgotten all about this in a long time. Now, it starts to bring him back to his state of mind when he was drawing it.
Kiu Wai knows now……..Mei Ling still treasures this letter…..something that he does not expect…….which puts a big smile on his face. He stands there looking at the picture for at least 15 minutes.
His eyes then shift down below. He notices a small rock on the table. He picks up the rock and feels it. He recognizes the source of this object……the cave.
Kiu Wai sits down at the table and holds the rock to his heart and closes his eyes. He patiently sits in her room, staring at the picture with the rock his hand for at least several hours.
After several hours of waiting, Kiu Wai then leaves with as a happy soul, knowing that he is in her heart. His love for her has tremendously grown in one afternoon.
Knock knock…..
Tat Wah opens his door when he hears the knock.
There she is, Mei Ling stands right before him, which he does not dare to dream of or expect. Tat Wah was hopeless when she left that day.
Mei Ling with a sad look: Tat Wah, I accept your proposal. I agree to marry you.
Tat Wah immediately takes her into his arms. Mei Ling bursts into tears as she leans her cheek against his chest.
Mei Ling continues to sob: I don’t know why my heart hurts so much. Tat Wah: I know my darling. I hope in time it will heal. I will never be able to replace Kiu Wai in your heart, but I will be the most loving and caring husband. Just let me take care of you and your heart. You are all I care about. Mei Ling: Tat Wah, let’s leave here and never come back. I want to forget all this pain. I want to get away from this evil. Tat Wah: Yes my darling. I will take you far away from this darkness and start a brand new life just ourselves. Mei Ling: I have one request. Tat Wah: Whatever you wish. Mei Ling: I need a couple of days to finish off the lessons with Wai Sun. I just want to spend some more time with him, because after the next few days, I will never be able to see again. Tat Wah: Yes, I understand.
Mei Ling without holding back her sorrow, cries like a baby in Tat Wah’s embrace, the only place where she feels safe, as Tat Wah gently caresses her face and wipes her tears away.

Chapter 41
Kiu Wai is the happiest man as he comes home, with Mei Ling in his hopeful thoughts,. Mei Chun comes running out, grabs him by his arm and pulls him toward the living room.
Mei Chun: Kiu Wai, why are are you home so late? Kiu Wai: What’s going on? Mei chun: Come in, there’s great news!
Kiu Wai enters the living room and sees Mei Ling…..with Tat Wah….sitting next to each other talking to Mrs.Ton.
Mrs.Ton sees Kiu Wai comes in and stop her conversation with Tat Wah and turns to Kiu Wai.
Mrs.Ton: We have good news Kiu Wai. Mei Chun excitedly continues: Teacher Ling is getting married!
Kiu Wai thinks that he heard it wrong, so he asks Mei Chun again: Teacher Ling is what? Mrs.Ton quickly answers: Teacher Ling is getting married!
Kiu Wai thinks it’s a joke that they’re playing.
Kiu Wai smiles and asks: To whom? Tat Wah puts his hand over Mei Ling’s and holds them: To me. Mei Ling finally says “yes”. Mei Chun: I’m so happy for both of you. You are a very lucky man to marry this teacher of ours. I hope you won’t take her away.
Kiu Wai is so much in shock that his ears are plugged up the moment Tat Wah answered him. He can’t hear anything else following that. His eyes are just fixated on Mei Ling and Tat Wah while standing there motionless. He can’t speak nor move.
Mei Ling has not given once glance at Kiu Wai ever since he entered the room. However, from the corner of her eyes, she can see his shock, and his intense focus on her. Mei Ling to Mei Chun: I am so sorry to disappoint you Mrs.Ton, but Tat Wah and I are planning leave here really soon. I am here to give you my notice and I hope you understand. A wife has to follow her husband wherever he goes.
A thousand knives are stabbing Kiu Wai’s heart at one time. A wife? Is this a joke? Is it reality or is it a nightmare? He’s just standing there, soaking up this shock, and not really knows how to react to them as his gazes are still on Mei Ling.
Mei Chun: I am so sad to hear that we will be losing you. But I understand your happiness. Mei Ling: I don’t want to leave here until I wrap up my lessons with Wai Sun. Mei Chun: So when will be your last day here? Mei Ling: In five days. Mei Chun: So soon? Tat Wah: Yes. We can’t wait to get married start a family together. Mrs.Ton: Very good pick Mr.Yam. When you see a good woman, you have to grab her before she’s slipped away. Mei Chun: I feel so sad for Wai Sun to lose a teacher like you. Mei Ling smiles: That’s life. We can’t always get what we want. Tat Wah: Please excuse me, I have a lot of things to take care of, a wedding to plan. In the meantime, please take care of my fiancée for me. Mei Ling to Tat Wah: I will walk you out.
Kiu Wai still stands there watching Mei Ling and Tat Wah walking out, hand in hand. He rubs his eyes for he cannot believe what he is seeing.
Mei Chun to Kiu Wai: Are you alright? Why didn’t you congratulate them? Kiu Wai: I am sorry. I feel very tired. Mei Chun: Why don’t you go to bed first, I have to go talk to Wai Sun, to prepare him for the news of losing his teacher. Kiu Wai: I will see you later.
Tat Wah to Mei Ling while walking him out: Mrs.Ton doesn’t know that you already know the truth, so try to act normal. Mei Ling: Don’t worry, I will. Tat Wah: If she finds out, both you and Kiu Wai will be in danger. She is capable of anything to make her daughter happy. You remember that. Mei Ling: I will be careful. Tat Wah holds Mei Ling tight in his arms: I really worry about your stay here. If it wasn’t because you want to spend a few more days with Wai Sun, I would take you away with me right now. Mei Ling: Thank you for concerning about me. Tat Wah: I love you Mei Ling and I don’t want to see anything happening to you.
Kiu Wai runs quickly to Mei Ling’s quarter. He stops her before she comes inside.
Kiu Wai grabs her arm by her elbow and turns her around.
Kiu Wai: Please tell me that this is not true! Mei Ling avoids looking into Kiu Wai’s eyes and coldly asks: What is not true? Kiu Wai: You getting married to Tat Wah! Mei Ling: It’s true Mr.Ton, I am getting married to Tat Wah. Kiu Wai raises his voice with anger: You can’t married Tat Wah!!! Mei Ling raises her voice back: Why not? I can marry whomever I choose! You have no right to interfere with my personal life. Kiu Wai: Why do you marry him? Mei Ling: It’s none of your business! Kiu Wai: It’s all my business. Your eyes can’t lie to me. Mei Ling: What do you know? You don’t know our love. Kiu Wai: I know your heart! You can lie to anyone, but you can’t lie to me. You can’t lie to me because you love me!
Mei Ling is stunned. She is silent for a moment because she doesn’t know how to reject this truth. She is fighting hard within herself to find her strength to continue with this challenge.
Mei Ling: Mr.Ton, I think you’ve misunderstood my feelings for you. Kiu Wai: Misunderstood? Mei Ling: Yes, you’re too confident in yourself. Kiu Wai: What you’re saying is that it’s not true love between us? Mei Ling laughs: True love? Mr.Ton, do you think that I actually fell in love with a married man like you? Kiu Wai: Yes I did and I still do believe that you love me. Explain to me my proposal letter of eight years ago, explain to me the rock, and…………explain to me the kiss we shared.
Mei Ling is speechless and cannot find one rebuttal.
She turns around and runs toward her room: Leave me alone!
Kiu Wai quickly chases after her and manages to push and squeeze through the door.
He forcefully pulls her against his body and shows her his love by kissing her passionately.
In a few seconds of weakness, she gives into the kiss she has been dreaming of everynight. The image of her lover is finally complete……..in Kiu Wai. Kiu Wai…… and the lover she’s been dreaming of for so many years…….. are finally one.

Chapter 42
Then the thought of the consequence appears in her mind. Risking Kiu Wai’s life and Wai Sun’s future is too much to bear. The emotions are so overwhelming that Mei Ling starts to cry as Kiu Wai continues kissing her with all of his passion.
With all her strength, she pushes her hands against his chest to break away from the powerful kiss. Once she breaks loose from his kiss, he suddenly can see her painful tears.
Kiu Wai reaches out to Mei Ling: Mei Ling, what’s wrong? Something has happened hasn’t it? Mei Ling cries and begs: Please don’t do this to me anymore. Kiu Wai: Please stop denying me. I can’t be tortured like this any longer. Mei Ling breaks down on the floor and cries: If you really care for me, please set me free so I can have my own happiness. Kiu Wai kneels down and grabs her shoulders: You’ve been missing the past few days. What were you doing? Something had happened Mei Ling. I just know it. You don’t love Tat Wah. Please tell me your pain. Mei Ling cries out loud: Why don’t you get it? What can I say to get this message through to you? I love Tat Wah! I love him! I love him! Kiu Wai: Then why are you crying? Our kiss can’t lie to me. Don’t tell me that you didn’t feel anything for me when I kissed you! You can’t deny it. It’s love that we both felt. Mei Ling: It’s not love! Kiu Wai: If it’s not love, then what it is? Mei Ling: It’s lust! Kiu Wai: Mei Ling, how can you even say that? What is going on with you? You’re not the same like before. Something has changed you. Please let me help you. Mei Ling: Please leave! I don’t want to do anything wrong to Tat Wah. Kiu Wai: Mei Ling, I won’t let you go until you tell me right now that you don’t love me. Look at me Mei Ling, and tell me the truth from your heart.
Mei Ling stops her flowing tears and looks straight into Kiu Wai’ teary eyes.
Mei Ling: I don’t love you, I only love Tat Wah. Yes, I admit at one point I did fall for you, but everything changed when Tat Wah came here into the picture. He has shown me the greatest love that I have never felt. I feel complete when I’m with him. Mr.Ton, you can’t even come close to Tat Wah. No one cares for me and loves me the way he does. And for myself, I have never loved anyone like the way I love Tat Wah. You probably think that there is something special when we kissed, but you want to know the truth? It’s Tat Wah that I think of when I kissed you.
Kiu Wai’s heart sinks to the bottom like a rock. He slowly gets up while Mei Ling is still on the floor looking up at him.
Mei Ling: Now go back to your wife. She needs you, I don’t.
Kiu Wai is completely numb: I am sorry. I guess I really did misunderstand your feelings for me then. I was overconfident in myself like you had said. It’s all my fault and I do apologize for everything. Thank you for telling me the truth. I will leave you alone from now on. Congratulations to you and Tat Wah. I wish you both the best.
Kiu Wai walks out and closes the door behind him.
Mei Ling waits that Kiu Wai has gone off before she breaks down in tears on her bed. She curls up with her pillow and cries endlessly the rest of the night.
Mei Ling murmurs to herself as she cries on her bed: I am so sorry to hurt you like this my love. My heart is torn into thousand pieces. I know that you’re hurt and angry, but your pain is nothing compared to mine. I am so hurt than you can ever imagine. I know that you resent me because of my lies, but if this is what going to take so that you and Wai Sun can have a bright future together, then it’s worth all my sacrifice. I rather see you hate me than to see you in danger, and that Wai Sun grows up without a father. Why did you have to be so persistence with your love for me? I had to say the opposite of how I truly feel so that you won’t think of me anymore. That way, it will be easier on you with my departure. You will soon forget this pain and will feel happy again with your family, because I will slowly fade from your memory. I will leave here with a heavy heart full of untold truths and the hidden pains. It’s better to that it’s me who’s going to carry all of the sorrowness. Finally I am able to convince you. Several times, I almost failed because of your strong persistence. You could see through my heart like nobody could. I have always dreamt of running into your loving arms once I found you, but I am not allowed to. The reality is so cruel. I have to hold back all my love and my longing for you. Therefore, I will forever keep my love for you deep inside my heart to my grave.
That night, Mrs.Ton consults with Miss Yin about Mei Ling.
Mrs.Ton: What do you think of this girl? Do you think she knows yet? Miss Yin: I don’t think so. Mrs.Ton: It’s good that she’s leaving soon. Otherwise, it’s a lingering headache for me. Miss Yin: Well, she has a couple of days left. Mrs.Ton: That’s why we should be really viligent with her action around her. I want you to pay extra attention on her for me. Any suspected move should be reported to me. Miss Yin: Yes, Mrs.Ton. Mrs.Ton: She better not stir up anything during the remaining days. Otherwise, she will pay a big price if she dares to challenge me.

Chapter 43
The next morning, Mei Ling makes her way toward the library to meet Wai Sun like usual. Coincidentally, Kiu Wai is coming toward her from the opposite end. They both look up at the same time and see each other. They immediately look away to the side to avoid the eye contacts.
Just then, Wai Sun comes running from the courtyard toward Mei Ling with his hands behind his back.
Wai Sun yells out: Teacher Ling! Please wait.
Kiu Wai can’t help but to look over to Wai Sun to see what he is up to.
Mei Ling responds back with a big grin on her face: Wai Sun! There you are.
Wai Sun stops Mei Ling as Kiu Wai comes straight to their direction. He intends to keep on going and not to acknowledge Mei Ling, but Wai Sun calls out to his attention.
Wai Sun: Father! Want to see what I got for Teacher Ling?
Mei Ling still does not dare to look at Kiu Wai. Neither Mei Ling nor Kiu Wai exchange glances except focusing on Wai Sun.
Kiu Wai: What are you up to now Wai Sun? Being naughty again? Mei Ling: What do you have for me Wai Sun?
Wai Sun hands Mei Ling a bundle of magnolias that he was hiding behind his back.
With the sight of magnolias………..and Kiu Wai…………..Mei Ling can’t help but shed her tears. She tries to hold them back but it was out of her control.
For Kiu Wai, there is a rush of emotion overflowing his heart. He hasn’t seen magnolias since that day with his lover in the wooden house.
Then, at the same time, Kiu Wai is taken by great surprise when he sees Mei Ling’s tears from the corner of his eyes.
Wai Sun: Teacher Ling, I found these for you so that you wouldn’t leave me. Mei Ling hugs Wai Sun and cries: Wai Sun, I am so sorry that I have to leave you.
Kiu Wai tries to cut off any feelings he has for Mei Ling, but for some reason at this moment, it still hurts him so much to see Mei Ling cry like this. Under this circumstance….her tender moment with Wai Sun…..and the magnolias…….the combination of the two makes Kiu Wai very vulnerable as he stands there watching Mei Ling and Wai Sun crying with each other.
Wai Sun: Why do you have to leave? Don’t you love me? Mei Ling: You have no idea how much I love you. There are things that cannot be explained. Wai Sun: Will I ever see you again? Will you come back to see me? Mei Ling: I don’t know if I will be able to. But just know that no matter where I will be, you will always be in my heart. Wai Sun: I want to go with you. Please don’t leave me here.
Wai Sun looks up to his father: Father, can I go with Teacher Ling?
Mei Ling looks up and sees Kiu Wai’s teary eyes. He immediately looks away so that Mei Ling cannot see them, but it was too late.
Mei Ling turns to Wai Sun: Wai Sun, listen to me. I am just your teacher. You parents are here. You need to stay with them. I know it’s very hard for you that I won’t be your teacher anymore. But there will be a new one. Soon, you will forget this sadness. Wai Sun cries harder: No! I don’t want a new one! I only want you! Mei Ling: Wai Sun, do you love me? Wai Sun: Yes. Mei Ling: You have to listen to what I say right now. Your father loves you very much. Promise me that you will be a good boy and listen to your father.
In this instance, Kiu Wai feels as if someone is tightening his heart. He doesn’t understand why he still feels the love for Mei Ling more than ever when he has reminded himself the whole night before not to fall for her again. Her present action and her words from the previous night do not match. He can actually feel her pain and sorrow.
Mei Ling holds Wai Sun close to her with tears rolling down her cheeks: Wai Sun, you have to love and respect your father. Do this for me. I will be very happy if I know that you listen to me alright? Wai Sun: How can you know if I listen to you or not if you’re not here? Mei Ling: I just know Wai Sun……from my instinct……my heart. Mei Ling: Can you promise me? Wai Sun: Yes, I will Teacher Ling. Mei Ling wipes her tears: Come on, let’s go out. I’m going to give you your lessons outdoor today. Wai Sun stops crying: Outdoor? Mei Ling: I’m going to show you all the wonderful things outside. Wai Sun: That sounds fun.
Wai Sun to Kiu Wai: I’ll see you later Father.
Mei Ling takes Wai Sun’s hand and walks away as Kiu Wai looks on with full of unexplained sadness. Is it because the magnolias reminding him the memories of his lover? Or it is because seeing Mei Ling’s tears and her caring for Wai Sun?
In Mei Ling’s mind, she has succeeded in convincing him her rejection toward him as the next few days pass by smoothly. She’s been able to keep him out of her vicinity. At least, it seems like everything is turning out like she has planned.
On the last day at the Ton’s……..
Mei Ling is almost done with her packing. Miss Yin comes into Mei Ling’s room to ask her if she can come to Mrs.Ton’s office so that she will get her salary. Mei Ling leaves her room and follows Miss Yin.
In the garden outside Mei Ling’s room, Mei Chun and Wai Sun are playing ball with each other. Wai Sun accidentally kicks the ball into Mei Ling’s door and the door opens. It rolls underneath the bed.
Wai Sun to Mei Chun: Sorry Mother, the ball is in Teacher Ling’s room. Mei Chun: That’s alright Wai Sun. You play here and I will go get it.
Mei Chun walks into Mei Ling’s room as the door is open. She takes the ball from underneath the bed. Then something caught her eyes in the opened luggage when she raises her head up.
Mei Chun then looks around to see if anyone is around. She carefully takes a stack of letters out of the luggage. With full of curiosity, she opens one up and reads.
My children, today is your first birthday. I want to give you a pair of matching bracelets as my first present for you. They are supposed to bring you luck and good health. The jeweler tells me that he can engrave your names on them. But how can I have you names engraved when I don’t even know what they are? Please forgive me my children.
Mei Chun picks up another one:
Will you be able to recognize that I am your mother if you were to see me on the streets? I think of both of you all the time, my children. I wonder how you look like. I wonder if there are any resemblances between us. People always say that there is a special bond between the mother and her children. Will I be able to feel this connection when I see you? I miss you so much and I’m hoping to be reunited with you soon. Please wait for me.
And the next:
Today is your fifth birthday. My chances of seeing both of you are getting slimmer by the day. But, my love for you is stronger than ever. Wherever you are, I hope you are loved. You probably don’t know that your mother is desperately looking for you. My tears are falling and my heart is aching as I am writing you this letter.
Then, one………. Wai Sun, you have no idea how much this mother of yours loves you. I have been searching for you for six long years, and at last I found you. I am so happy that I finally get to see you, hold you, and be close to you. The past few months were the best times in my life. I got to see you grow from a stubborn little boy into an obedient, well-mannered person. You may never know that I’m your real mother, but that’s alright. I am just happy to know that you are loved, and that you are close to your loving father. I will leave here with that peace of mind. Just remember that I will always love you unconditionally and forever.
Mei Chun is stunned as the letter is dropped onto the floor from her hand.
While Kiu Wai is getting ready to go home, Mr.Koo comes in and hands him a letter. Kiu Wai quickly opens and reads.
If you want to know the identity of the woman from 7 years ago in the wooden house, please come to the pagoda at the Water Temple tonight.

Chapter 44
Kiu Wai is running as fast as he can to find the answers he has been waiting for so long. Each minute feels like an eternity. The fuzzy image of his lover pulses in his mind with each stride that he takes.
He’s been to the Water Temple with Mei Chun and Wai Sun many times before. But this time, it’s completely different. He is filled with full of anxiety and inquisitiveness.
After running on his feet for a while, which seems like a lifetime, Kiu Wai can finally see the pagoda clearly ahead of him. He can see a woman standing inside. Because it’s dark, he can’t make out who she is or how she looks like. Her back is facing him as she’s looking down into the lotus pond.
His heart is pounding heavily against his chest as he’s walking slowly and cautiously toward this woman. Her image is getting clearer and clearer as each step is getting closer. He can see her two braids. Just looking at her back, he senses his familiarity to her. When Kiu Wai is about ten feet away from her, he stops because he is completely overwhelmed and stunned as her identity is becoming obvious.
Kiu Wai’s heart has just stopped beating. His eyes are completely filled with tears. Kiu Wai is opening his mouth trying to make out his first words, but there seems to be a lump in his throat that makes it difficult for him to vocalize. At the same time, he can feel the shakings in his legs.
His tears roll down as the first words were able to come out slowly: Are you the woman in that wooden house 7 years ago?
Mei Ling is stiffened when she hears his unexpected voice. She doesn’t dare to turn around. Her heart is beating so fast in this frozen moment.
Why is he here? How does he know this truth? Who has revealed it to him? How is she supposed to answer this question? Can she deny it? These questions are bombarding her as she’s trying to think of a way to avoid this confrontation.
Kiu Wai trembles as the tears continue to flow down his face: Please Mei Ling, please tell me if you are that woman that I had and always loved, the woman who never left my heart and mind for the past 7 years.
Knowing that Kiu Wai would not give up, Mei Ling realizes that she has no way out of this situation. The only way to do so is to answer this question. Mei Ling still has her back facing him while controling the tears in her eyes from falling down.
Mei Ling coldly responds: No I am not. I think you’re mistaken. Kiu Wai reaches out his arm and touches her shoulder with his hand: Mei Ling, please tell me the truth!
His touch sends shivers throughout her body. She wants so much to turn around and admit that he’s the love of her life that she has been searching for, but she has to fight till the very end.
Mei Ling: I told you already that you’re mistaken. I am Mei Ling. I am not the woman that you had loved so dearly. Kiu Wai still with his arm extends out and rests on her shoulder: No, you’re lying.
Mei Ling starts to hear Kiu Wai crying right behind her back. With so much agony and pain, her tears start to roll down.
Kiu Wai: Oh my god, why was I so blind? The clues were all over in front me. You knowing Tat Wah…..Guangzhou……..the magnolias……..your sorrow …..your tears…….your lies to me………your love and caring for Wai Sun………..and the most important clue of all that I missed…………the lover that you have been searching for. Your lover is me! Oh my god, you’ve been searching for me and all this time I thought you were dead.
Kiu Wai cries heavily as he’s tightening his grip on her shoulder.
Kiu Wai: Please forgive me for being so blind and ignorant. Mei Ling, please acknowledge to me! I need to know for once! Mei Ling breaks her silent and cries heavily: So what if I acknowledge? What is the use? What good does it do? You and Wai Sun have a good life, and you’re married. My existence will not do any good to you both.
Finally………..Kiu Wai learns the truth. His heart is filled with such immense emotions that just make him sobs uncontrollably.
Kiu Wai: Oh Mei Ling, you are that woman that I never stopped loving! You’ve just found out about this and that’s why you’re planning to leave me?
At this point with Kiu Wai’s sobbings, Mei Ling cannot deny any longer. Mei Ling nods her head.
Kiu Wai cries harder than ever when he sees her nod. A heavy feeling is lifted from his heavy chest.
Kiu Wai: Oh Mei Ling, why are you keeping this sorrowness to yourself? Don’t you think I deserve to know the truth so that I can share this pain with you? Instead you made the decision for me and decided to keep quiet so that you can carry all of this pain alone. I can’t let you suffer like that. You have suffered too much already! We both have suffered! You have no idea how it was like for me thinking I could never see you again. I died for many years. I never thought in my wildest dream that I would see you again. Please don’t run away from me Mei Ling. Please don’t. I have been tortured enough. I lost you once and I will not let you go again.
Mei Ling: What do you expect me to do? Continue to stay here with you and your wife? Continue to be Wai Sun’s teacher?
Kiu Wai: You, me, and Wai Sun ……we’re a family now Mei Ling. We belong together. We will run away together……far away from here. We’re going to start a new life with the three of us. No one can separate us from each other anymore.
Kiu Wai slowly turns Mei Ling around to face him. He then sees the tears that have been falling from her beautiful red eyes. And Mei Ling sees the tears on Kiu Wai’s as well.
For the first time, they finally face each other as the lovers in the wooden house, and also as Kiu Wai and Mei Ling. They stare into each other’s tearful eyes as the tears continue to flow endlessly.
With powerful force, Kiu Wai and Mei Ling draw each other into the embrace they have been longing for so many years. They both continue to cry, releasing the pain that they had suffered.
The earth just stops spinning. The time stops clicking. Only Kiu Wai and Mei Ling exist in this time and place.
Kiu Wai holds Mei Ling’s face with both of his hands and look deeply into her eyes. He then kisses each tear as it falls down on her face as Mei Ling closes her eyes.
Kiu Wai then pulls her close to his body and they both kiss each other like they have always been dreaming of. Mei Ling finally sets herself free in this passionate kiss with Kiu Wai. They close their eyes as they feel the kiss and the touches that they have been yearning.
While still being locked in her intimate kiss with Kiu Wai, Mei Ling slowly opens her eyes to observe her lover’s face up close. She tenderly feels his face with both of her hands.
Suddenly, in the corner of her one eye, she sees Mei Chun standing near the pagoda, staring visciously at their kiss.

Chapter 45
Mei Ling immediately pulls herself out from the kiss and turns head to Mei Chun’s direction.
Kiu Wai, not realizing a third person is there: What is wrong my love?
Mei Ling, astonished at the sight of Mei Chun: Kiu Wai….look…..
Kiu Wai turns to where Mei Ling is looking at, and is in complete shock to see Mei Chun standing there watching them in their most intimate moments.
Mei Chun walks over to Mei Ling and raises her hand at her. Kiu Wai grabs her wrist before she has a chance to hurt Mei Ling.
Kiu Wai angrily scolds Mei Chun: Don’t you dare hurt Mei Ling! Mei Chun with tears rolling down from her angry face and yells at Mei Ling: Adulterer! How dare you try to steal my husband and son? Mei Ling: I am sorry Mei Chun. I didn’t mean to hurt you. Mei Chun: You’re kissing and touching my husband in public and you’re telling me that you didn’t mean to? Kiu Wai: Mei Chun, I am not allowing you being disrespectful to Mei Ling. She has suffered enough already. Mei Chun turns to Kiu Wai: She has suffered? What about me? How dare you defend this worthless woman and picks her over your wife? Kiu Wai: In my mind, Mei Ling has always been my wife………always has and always will!
Mei Chun cannot believe at what she has just heard.
Mei Chun angrily asks: This is outrageous! How can you treat me like this?! I always thought that you cared and loved me. What happened Kiu Wai? It’s all because of this woman here.
Mei Chun turns to Mei Ling: Who do you think you are to compete with me? Kiu Wai and I were married legally in front of our ancestors and our family. You……..you were just a filthy woman who was conveniently there to bear babies for him. What right do you have to compete with me?
Kiu Wai angrily raises his arm and slaps Mei Chun as hard as he could. This is the evil side of her that he has never seen before.
Kiu Wai screams from the top of his lungs: Enough Mei Chun! Don’t you put her down like that! Mei Chun touches her face: You! How could you? Kiu Wai: I should’ve done this a long time ago. I should’ve done this the day you killed my daughter.
Mei Ling starts to cry when Kiu Wai brings up the death of their daughter. Kiu Wai puts his arms around Mei Ling to comfort her.
Kiu Wai cries: I have never forgiven nor forgotton how you rejected my daughter! She died because of your rejection. I still think of her every single day till this very day.
Kiu Wai looks at Mei Ling: Please forgive me Mei Ling for not being able to save our daughter. I feel this guilt every minute of my life. Everytime I look at Wai Sun, I can’t help but think of her.
Kiu Wai turns to Mei Chun: Yes, at one point I did care for you. But it was also you who pushed me away. You pushed me away the moment you cursed for Mei Ling’s death! You pushed me even further away when you refused to accept my daughter. I’ve been living with you all of these years not because I loved you, but because it’s part of my contract to your mother. Mei Chun: Contract? You call our marriage a contract? Kiu Wai: You can call it whatever you want, but at this point, it’s no longer a marriage. It’s about time for me to stand up for the ones I love……….and that is.Mei Ling and our son Wai Sun, mine and Mei Ling’s. Mei Chun takes a deep breath then continues: Alright, if this is how you want it, I will satisfy both of you. Kiu Wai, I gave you a chance tonight, but you blew it. Kiu Wai: What are you talking about?
Mei Chun raises her hand up high and signals. Suddenly a group of at least a dozen men with ropes and sticks come running out from behind the temple toward them.
Mei Ling then realizes what is happening.
Mei Ling turns to Kiu Wai and panics: Oh my god, it’s a set up.
Kiu Wai pulls Mei Ling into his arms and holds her tight to protect her.
Mei Chun with a devious smile: No wonder you’re a teacher Mei Ling. You’re pretty bright.
Mei Chun turns to Kiu Wai: Yes, it’s me who sent you that note. You were so desperate to find out about this loving woman of yours that you didn’t care about me or the consequences.
Mei Chun to Mei Ling: Thanks to your letters Teacher Ling, I got to witness this adultery tonight. You want Wai Sun? I don’t think so, because he belongs to me. In his mind, I’m the only mother he has. As a matter of fact, I don’t think you will have a chance of seeing him ever again. As for running away with my husband………….sorry, I cannot grant you this wish, at least not in this lifetime.
The moment Mei Chun finishes her sentence, the men are already there…………tearing Mei Ling away from Kiu Wai. Mei Chun cunningly smiles as she witnesses the heartbreaking separation between Mei Ling and Kiu Wai.
