There was a hospital residing in a busy city. There were hundreds of patients in each section of the building. And every day, they know not about what will become of them. One patient in particular lay on his hospital bed, sleeping motionlessly with bandages around his head. And here as he slept, he looked peaceful. Most likely, he was in a dream that can keep his mind in his sanctuary.
In the month of May, Miu Kiu Wai was involved in a serious car accident being one of three people who were injured. They have not told anyone whether or not he would make it or not. They didn’t want for them to have false hope. His condition was wavering and they did not know what will happen. Now, they left time do its magic.
In his own consciousness, Kiu Wai was happy. He sought memories from his life that were his happiest. Kiu Wai looked down at him, he saw that he wasn’t covered with bandages anymore but was in a white T-shirt and jeans. There was black all around him, but then a blurry, faint, white light started becoming visible. The light started to form into a figure.
It was Mei Ling?
She was dressed in her light blue and white outfit, she was dressed as Wong Yung. Her back was turned to him but he knew it was clearly Mei Ling. He watched her from the back not daring to move any closer for he was afraid that she’d disappear. His eyes widened slightly as she looked over her shoulder and smiled at him. This caused him to hold his breath.
That smile?
It had been so long since he’s seen that smile. Almost a decade, maybe two. He had long since stopped counting.
Before he could make any movements, Mei Ling disappeared into the blackness. Again he was all alone, surrounded by nothing but black. To his right, the same light appeared and Mei Ling was there seconds later. Now, she was dressed in an all gold costume. Sik Sik? He turned and watched her but this time, she watched him too. Her face bursted into a smile once again.
“Why do you look so sad? You told me once if you’re thinking about something sad you shouldn’t think about it anymore.”
Her voice?
Her smile he could envision in his head always, but to hear her voice was a whole new experience. It was still the melodic harmony that he had ringing through his mind at times.
Once again, she disappeared. Kiu Wai turned to his left now and watched for the same light. And it abided him. Dressed in her green-blue outfit she fiddled with her hand cloth…Chor Ying?
“If there’s something wrong, you can tell me.”
Kiu Wai had the urge to say ‘All right, stop worrying. The doctor said there’s nothing wrong.’ Though when he opened his mouth no words came out and her image once again, disappeared. He didn’t know if this was considered a dream or being tormented to see one image of Mei Ling and then have another.
He waited silently for another Mei Ling to appear, and saw nothing in front of him or from the sides. Kiu Wai turned around and he saw her. She was now dressed as Siu Ching, his princess.
His beautiful, lovely, princess.
Her expression was in a small pout. She was looking down but then glanced up and asked?
“Is that hairpin more attractive than me?” Hairpin? Kiu Wai looked down at himself and felt around for anything thin and long, soon he found something in his back pocket. It was her golden hairpin? He was confused at the moment; he didn’t know what to do. Blankly, he held it out to her but she simply smiled and disappeared again.
Kiu Wai turned and looked all over, still grasping the hairpin. This time, two Mei Lings appeared but they looked absolutely different from each other. One was dressed in a tan colored long dress with a matching ribbon in her hair. The other, sported an old fashion Chinese outfit with her hair pulled in low pigtails. To Wan and Pui Ying?
“You’ll stop gambling won’t you?” To Wan sweetly asked smiling. Pui Ying crossed her arms and looked the other way.
“He can do whatever he pleases.” Pui Ying said. To Wan turned to her.
“Don’t be silly, gambling is barbaric!”
Kiu Wai stepped toward them to stop any verbal fighting that might happen. To Wan noticed this and smiled while the other just rolled her eyes and looked the other way again. Soon, he watched as they did not start to disappear but to mix into one. Now in their place stood Mei Ling.
Just Mei Ling.
She looked the same as she did at her last birthday. Her 26th birthday…her very last birthday.
“Thank you for all that you’ve done for me, Kiu Wai” She had a smile planted on her face but it didn’t quite reach her eyes. Kiu stepped towards her but left 4 feet for he feared that if he got to close, she’d disappear…forever, again.
“I would be content, if I could pass on right now, if it means to be with you. Even only spiritually.” It was the first time Kiu Wai spoke up. His eyes held the desperation and truth behind his words. Mei Ling smiled again.
“We will be together again, but not now. Your time will come, but it isn’t now.” Mei Ling was now the one to walk closer, she stopped when she was right in front of him. He opened his mouth to say otherwise but was quickly halted as he felt her fingers against his lips.
Her touch.
Did she know how hard it was these past years? Everyday, thinking about her. Remembering her like no one has remembered her. He looked at her differently then anyone else. He loved her like no one else.
“You’ll make it through this…and you will live on until the appointed day for you. Until then, I will wait for you. Would you like to see it?” Mei Ling whispered to him softly, her nose inches from his. She saw in his eyes, the curious and questioning look and smiled. “Would you like to see…paradise?”
Mei Ling held her hands up to the side of his head and used her thumbs to gently closed both of his eyes. Kiu Wai said nothing, but drowned in her closeness. It just felt so real. He was faintly aware that she pulled back her hands and he opened his eyes.
There before him, was paradise. It was a huge garden with wide variety flowers. Down below, he saw a small red bridge curving over a small stream. Kiu Wai looked up and saw above the trees, a small house set on top of a hill. Yes, this was indeed paradise. Birds flew from tree to tree playing in a game a tag it seemed like. Mei Ling saw his awed face and she caught sight of a rabbit.
She slowly walked over and picked up the pure white bunny, petting it. Kiu Wai looked around and saw there were quite a lot of animals and plants. It was indeed different from the usual Hong Kong business. He looked to his side again expecting to see Mei Ling but she was no longer there. She was standing down at the bridge, looking back up at him.
“I’ll be waiting.” She offered one last smile and she slowly disappeared. Kiu Wai started to run towards her thinking to catch her before she could completely disappeared but he saw that paradise was slowly fading away too. Before he knew it, Kiu Wai found himself feeling extremely tired and totally blacked out from where he was standing.
He woke up at the sound of beeping and people talking. Where was he now?
“Mr. Miu?” Someone called his name. Kiu Wai opened his eyes to see a doctor and a nurse leaning over him. “Ah, Mr. Miu, we have great news for you.”
Kiu Wai stayed silent.
“We find that you have pulled through the critical stage of your condition and you should steadily be getting better.” The doctor informed him with a smile. Yet somehow, he didn’t feel that happy to find that he will be all right. But if Mei Ling wants him to pull through until it was time, he would.
Over the next month, Kiu Wai was indeed getting better. Through that time, he had gone through physical therapy. Even as his life was going back to normal, Mei Ling never left his thoughts. Now, he was at home. He took a couple of weeks off from work to get back to his everyday life.
Leaving the house he drove his car towards a certain cemetery. Once he got there, he walked along each headstone until he came to the one he was looking for. Kiu Wai kneeled down paying his respects and he pulled out a single red rose and placed it on the ground.
His eyes caught something and he bent closer to the headstone, spreading out parts of grass to see writing.
“I’ll be waiting.”
