Chapter 1

***BEEP…BEEP…BEEP*** Umphhh…thought Michael as he reached over to turn off his alarm clock. Without looking at the clock he already know it’s only 6am as he heads to the restroom to begin his daily routine. He enters the restroom and turn on the lights. He went over to the sink and splashes cold water on his face to wake himself up. As he reaches for his toothbrush he accidentally knocks over the tooth brush holder causing it to fall to the floor. “”, he curses silently to himself. He bends down to pick it up, and notices the purple tooth brush. An aching pain tugged at his heart as he recalls Mei Ling’s sudden departure. It seems like yesterday she was just here he thought sadly grabbing the toothbrush.
He walks back to his room and kissed the picture on the wall, before heading to the closet. Humming to himself the theme song from “Fearless Duo”, he quickly gets into his jogging clothes to begin his morning jog at the park. He got to the park at exactly 6:25 like usual and parked his SL500 convertible. Usually there’s no one there at the park around this time. Michael prefers it like this so he could enjoy the fresh morning air and have some quiet time to himself. As he pulls into the parking space he notice a car already there.
Hmm…He thought wondering who else is here so early in the morning. Whistling to himself he got out of the car and walked down to the track. The sun was barely rising above the horizon blinding him with its bright rays as he stares up at the sky. The sky had an orangey, pinkish purple color as the sunlight begin to break into it. The view was breath taking as he stood there reminiscing how he and Mei Ling would go here every morning to watch the sun rise. He recall how soft and warm she felt as he held her from behind. The sweet scent of her perfume fills his nostril as they wait for the sun to rise. Every morning for the past 5 yrs, he has been reliving the same memory over and over in his heart. He could hear the chirping sounds from the birds as he continues down to the track. Down at the track, he notices someone already there. She looks like she’s in her mid twenties he guessed. He stood there watching her for a moment in awe. Since Mei Ling passed away he had lost all interest in being with anyone. As she passes by, he was able to get a better glimpse of her. Her hair was pulled back slightly in a loose ponytail and she was wearing a light lavender windbreaker. The same exact color Mei Ling use to wear when they went jogging together. Her eyes were big and round, her lips the color of blood. He squints his eyes from the glaring sun to take a better look. It is Mei Ling running on the track he thought as the color drained from his face. Could it be her he thought pinching himself to make sure he’s not asleep. Ouch!! That hurts he thought; so I’m not dreaming, then who is that running on the tracks?
***Flashback***
(Laughing) “Come on slow poke, it’s not that bad. If you’re not going to catch up soon I’m going to leave you” Wong Mei Ling said as she laughs and continue on without Michael. “Awww, com’on Mei Ling. You know I’m out of shape and you’re poking fun at me? What’s the meaning of this?” Michael complained as he slows down to catch his breath before he chase off after her. “Comm’n Michael when was the last time you actually exercise? This is good for you” Mei Ling says as she rolled her eyes at him. “Really, Mei Ling” Michael asked in a sarcastic tone of voice. “I of all people would know that; but at 6am in the morning when half of Hong Kong is still asleep, that’s another story. Can’t we do this later on this evening, when I’m more awake” he asked exaggeratedly. “Ok Michael I’ll make you a deal, if you can catch up with me I’ll be your personal maid for the day. You can do whatever you want with me, how’s that as a wake up call” Mei Ling asked with a thingyy smile. “Are you sure I can do what ever I want” Michael asks her with a mischievous smile. “Yeah, anything you want. If you could catch up with me” giggled Mei Ling as she took off.
End of flash back.
“Hey!! Hey!!.. are you ok?” asked Barbara Yung all concern. “Umm, yea I’m ok” Michael said with a tight smile. He didn’t know how long he’s been standing there daydreaming. He was so lost in thought that he didn’t hear her come up to him. She was now standing in front of him staring at him oddly. He was still pressed against the fence dazed and confuse at lost for words. “You look like you have seen a ghost. Are you sure you’re ok” she asked again. Taking a deep breath Michael reassured her with a smile, “Yes, I’m fine. Thanks for your concern.” “Oh, it’s nothing. I just thought something was wrong because you had the strangest look on your face a moment ago” said Barbara returning the smile. Their eyes locked for a moment neither of them saying anything. Barbara was at lost for words and was mesmerized by Michael’s handsome good looks. Realizing she was still staring at him she quickly looked away feeling a little embarrass. “Well, if nothing is wrong, then I guess I’ll get going. Bye!” Barbara said as she turns to leave. Michael feeling an instant attraction towards her didn’t want her to leave. Without thinking he blurted out the first thing that came to his mind. “Wait, can I know your name? I’m Michael Miu. I’m a doctor at Queen Elizabeth Hospital.” Smiling to herself, Barbara turns back and introduces herself as Barbara Yung. “So Barbara, are you new here? I haven’t seen you around this area before” Michael asked curiously. “Yea, I just moved here a month ago from Causaway Bay” Barbara replied. “Do you come here often” she asked him. “Yeah, I like to come out here every morning to do my run.” “Really?!” she asked in disbelief. “I do too” she said smiling showing her two rabbit teeth. “How come I have never seen you” Michael asked. “Oh, I usually run with my roommate but today she wasn’t feeling well.” They talk a little bit more until Barbara glanced down at her watch. “Oh, it’s 7am already. I have to head back and get ready for work. Today I have an early shift. It was nice meeting you. Hope to see you around” she said as she reach out to shake his hands. “Oh yeah, same here. Hope to see you around” Michael said not wanting to say good bye. As their hands touched a warm tingly feeling rushed through them causing them to hold on to one another’s hand a little longer. There’s no denying the attraction they have for one another.
Michael realizing he haven’t let go quickly dropped her hand and apologized. Barbara face turned bright red as she mumbles another good bye and hurriedly turn in the direction of her car and left.
Michael now all by himself is still in shock. I’m not dreaming am I? He slapped himself in the face to make sure he’s not dreaming. How could there be 2 people who look so much alike? Those big beautiful round eyes full of life as it twinkles beneath the morning light. The way her rabbit teeth stick out as she smile is unforgettable. She reminds him so much of Mei Ling. He remembers back to the day Mei Ling passed away.
May 14, 2001: Queen Elizabeth Hospital: Lying in her bed she looks pale and fragile as ever. Michael walked in quietly not wanting to disturb her rest. She opened her eyes slightly feeling his presence. Reaching over to him she stares lovingly into his eyes. “Hi sweetie” she says hoarsely. “Hi babe, how’s it going” he whispers as he bend down and place a gentle kiss on her soft lips. “Michael, I don’t know how much longer this will be. When I’m gone, please take good care of you” Mei Ling said with a smile as tears roll down from the corners of her eyes. “Stop saying that Mei Ling. You’re going to get better. Don’t let this illness take over you. You gotta fight it. We have a whole future ahead of us. You need to get better and wear our wedding dress you design yourself. Stop talking this nonsense.” Michael looked away, not wanting Mei Ling to see the tears in his eyes. “Michael, I know I’m not going to make it.” “Yes you will, you promise to fight this battle to the end” he whispers sadly as he wipes her tears away. “Dr. Koo just told me it’s not looking good. It keeps coming back Michael. I’m so tired of the chemotherapy and the medication. It hurts so much” she said barely above a whisper. Hearing the pain Mei Ling is going through hurts him like a knife slicing through his heart. “Life isn’t fair. Why, can’t it be me lying in this bed instead of you Mei Ling” he cried. Mei Ling smiles softly the smile he knew so well. “Michael, please don’t act like this. I don’t want to leave you like this. I love you too much. You have to promise me, you will move on with your life. Get married and have a family we always wanted.” “I can’t” he said shaking his head burying his face in her hand. “You’re the only one I love. Life without you is meaningless.” “You will have to try Michael” she continues softly. Michael looked over at Mei Ling kissed her forehead and nodded his head. With those last words Mei Ling was gone.
“Staring up at the sky he wonders out loud “God are you playing with me? Is this a joke? 5 yrs ago you took away my one true love. Now 5yrs later you allow me to meet a Barbara Yung? Is this your way of giving me a second chance?

chapter 2
Barbara on her way back to her apartment continues to think about her encounter with Michael. She was still taken back by his handsome good looks and the feeling she had the moment their hands touch. It was a feeling she can’t describe, thinking about it now brings shivers down her spine. She pulls into her apartment and parks her car. She went into the elevator and pressed the button for the 3rd Floor. As she reaches into her purse to pull out her keys to open the door, her best friend Kristy Yeung came running out. “Whoa” Barbara exclaimed as Kristy nearly crashes into her. “Oops, sorry Barb, I’m in a hurry. Talk to you later” Kristy said in a rush. “Alright, see you tonight don’t forget to pick up the groceries” Barbara reminded her. “Ohhh.. Sorry Barb, can you do it tonight. I have a date tonight with Louise” Kristy said with an apologetic smile. “Huh, so that’s how it is. Now that there’s Louise, I guess you no longer need this old friend of yours” Barbara said with a half smile. “Comm’n Barb, you know it’s not like that. Tonight is our 2 yrs anniversary” says Kristy in a whiny voice. Laughing Barbara shook her head at her best friend. “I’m only joking, I’ll get the groceries. Do you need anything?” “Well, since you ask, here’s what I need” says Kristy as she shoves a long list into Barbara’s hand and took off before Barbara could say another word.
Still smiling to herself, she takes a look at the list and shook her head. “Aye, Kristy, I’m your roommate, your best friend and also your maid.” Reading the list out loud, “tampons, contact solutions, mousse, toilet paper, etc.” she shook her head tossing the list on to the table. She walks to her room to get her clothes to shower for work. In the shower she began to hum her favorite song (the theme song from The Fearless Duo)
Michael walks upstairs to his room to get ready for work. He opens the doors and looks around his room. Everything was kept the same way as it was 5 yrs ago. The room was designed like a Chinese martial art dojo. The hardwood floor was painted red, the walls all white. The black bed is pushed to one side of the room with a four post canopy, overflowing with a transparent white cloth. To the left of the bed stood a room divider covered with paintings of bamboo trees. Against the other side of the wall sits Mei Ling’s make up table, clean and untouched for 5yrs. Right above her make up table hangs a picture of Michael and Mei Ling from the wedding studio. Mei Ling had her hair all up in a fancy up-do, her dress a white strapless gown. Mei Ling had one arm on Michael’s shoulder, the other arm near his heart her smile so big; her eyes so bright and full of love as she looks deep into Michael’s eyes. Michael dressed in his white tuxedo, had both his arms wrapped around Mei Ling’s tiny waist. He looks down lovingly, adoringly into Mei Ling’s eyes, so lost in their world with a smile no words could describe.
Michael tosses his keys on to the night stand next to his bed and walks over to his closet. He pulls out his work clothes and heads to the restroom to shower for work. As he walks by the restroom he looked again at the picture he kisses every morning of Mei Ling. He smiles and kisses it again and whispers “I love you Mei Ling.”

“Good morning Madam” says Kent Tong one of her junior officer from their dept. “Good Morning Kent. You’re early today” replies Barbara as she heads to her office. She began to walk away then turn back and asked “Is everyone here yet? Please let them know there’s going to be a meeting at 9.” “Yes Madam.” With that she walks into the office. At 9am, Barbara walks into the meeting room where Felix, Margie, Ron, Kent, and Ruby sat waiting for her. Everyone was sitting and joking with one another, all went quiet as Barbara steps in. “Good Morning Madam” everyone replies. Barbara smile and greeted them. “Everyone ready?” They all sat there nodding their head. “Ok then let's begin, in front of you is the case we’ll be handling. It was transfer to us from the CIA. They want to pair up with us to catch this big time mob leader Simon Yam. According to our inside source, they’re suppose to be closing a drug deal today over at Kim Sa Chui. This is a very big and dangerous operation so you guys need to be careful. Here’s the plan. The CIA has already set up the monitoring cam to monitor that area. Felix & Margie, you guys act as a couple going sites seeing. Ron, you will be at the magazine stand. Kent you’ll be in the taxi that’s parked in front of where the deal is to take place. Once you see them do the switch off signal for us to come in. Ruby, you stand guard at the front end of the street, while I cover the other end. Everybody understand!?” “Yes, Madam!!” “Good, then we’ll meet downstairs in 10 min. And again be careful everyone” Barbara warned. Everyone begin gathering their things to leave.
Downstairs at the police dept. Felix and Margie left in one car, Ron, Ruby and Barbara in another. The streets of Hong Kong are busy and crowded with people going on with their daily routine. Beep, beep, honks a car in the lane next to them. Barbara glanced over and realizes he’s one of the suspects they were following. She turns to the front and instructs Ron to follow the gray corolla as it cuts in front of their green Honda civic. Ron called into Kent and Felix letting them know they have one of the suspect insight and for them to be prepare. “Ok, Madam, he’s stopping up ahead” says Ron. “Stop here, let me out. The rest of you guys stick to the plan. Go to your post until further instruction.” “Yes madam” they all replied in unison. Ruby looked over to Barbara and whisper “Be careful Barb.” Barbara just nods her head and stepped out.
The suspect she’s following is called Chicken. He’s one of Simon Yam’s followers. Barbara followed him for about 2 blocks when he suddenly stops in front of an antique shop. Glancing in the window, he saw Barbara ducked behind a car. Realizing he is being followed he took off running. Barbara seeing that she was discovered decided not to pursue not wanting to ruin the original plan they had. Frustrated, she radio in to see how the others are doing. “Ron, anything happening?” “No Madam, everything is normal.” “Ok, keep an out, Chicken saw me following him and took off in your direction.” “Yes, Ma’am” replies Ron. “Felix, how are you and Margie doing?” “Everything is under control. We saw one of the suspects you were following passed by and went in the red building across the street from us.” “Good job Felix. You and Margie, keep a low profile and go over there to see what room he’s going to.” “I’ll be right over.” She heads back to where Ruby was at waiting in the car. “Ruby, Chicken saw me following him. I don’t know if the drop off will go through” Barbara sigh heavily. “Why didn’t you chase after him” Ruby asked. “I didn’t want to ruin the plan.” “Good thinking Barb. What should we do now?” “Felix saw him enter the red building on Guo Long Way. Let’s head over there.” “Yes ma’am.”
They got to Guo Long Way in 5 minutes. Not wanting to be too suspicious they parked around the corner. Barbara called over to Felix. “Do you know what room he went into?” “No not yet” replied Felix. “Was he carrying anything when he went up there” she asked with interest. “Yeah, he had a black duffel bag with him.” “Ok, just stay put and continue what you’re doing. Ruby and I are around the corner. When he comes down let us know” Barbara instructed. “Alright, keep in touch” Felix said before he clicked off. They waited for about another 30 minute before they heard Felix’s voice over the CB radio. “Madam, he’s heading down the stair and he’s not carrying the black duffel bag anymore. He’s now carrying a red one. Do you want us to go in” Felix asked excitedly. “No hold off on it. Let’s follow him and see where he’s going. I’ll radio Kent right now.” Barbara called over to Kent. “Kent are you in position? Suspect 1 is coming down the stair, where are you at?” “I’m at the corner of Guo Long Way.” “Ok, drive down to the red building. The suspect is carrying a red duffel bag. Keep an eye on it. That could be the evidence that we need to get Simon Yam” Barbara said. Kent drove down to the red building as Chicken walks out. Chicken waved to Kent to slow down. Chicken got in and said to Kent, “to Phoenix Way Harbor.” Barbara and Ruby waited for Kent to pass and quickly follow from behind. “Felix, Margie, and Ron, you guys wait for the other person to come down an apprehend him. Don’t let him get away. Ruby and I am following Kent and Chicken. We’ll meet you back at the station” Barbara said. “Alright” they replied. Not long after Chicken left, a man dressed in a black jogging suit came down carrying a black duffel bag. Ron seeing the man quickly signals to Felix and Margie who was already waiting for him at the corner. Right when he turns the corner, he felt a tap on his shoulder. “Freeze, you’re under arrest” says Margie and Felix in unison. The guy didn’t let them catch him without a fight. He turned around and aims a blow at Felix’s face. He missed but it caught Felix and Margie off guard and it gave him a chance to run. Felix and Margie took off after him. He ran off into a deserted alley way ditching the black duffel bag in one of the weave basket. Margie and Felix followed close behind saw him tossed the bag into the basket. Margie quickly retrieves it as Felix continues after the man. The man kept running and running and end up back on Guo Long Way where Ron was waiting for him. Ron saw him coming quickly crouch down and did a side swipe kick causing the man to fall to the ground. Ron and the man continue to struggle on the ground as Felix came up from behind. Ron got on top of the man and lands a punch squarely on the guy’s jaw causing him to loose focus. Felix pulls the man up from the ground and slaps him behind his head. “You stupid fool, you tried to sucker punch me, huh” Felix asked angrily as he hits the guy again while he puts on the handcuffs. “Thanks for the help” Felix said turning to Ron with a grin. “No prob. Just doing my job” Ron replies with a nonchalant smile. “Man, you messed with the wrong person” he said sarcastically as he step up to the guy threatening to punch him again.


Chapter 3

“Ruby, they’re slowing down up ahead. And look there’s a black car parked over there at the dock” Barbara exclaimed excitedly. “Should we call for back up” Ruby asked anxiously. “Yea, radio into the station and let them know we would need back up” Barbara told her. They stopped their car a few feet from where Kent’s car is about to stop. Chicken quickly got out carrying the red duffel bag to the black car. Kent was instructed by Chicken to wait for him. “Ruby did you radio in for help? What’s taking them so long? If they don’t get here soon, whoever is in that black car will leave and all our hard work will go to waste” Barbara said desperately. After what seem like an eternity to Barbara she saw some movement inside the car. Another minute had passed and Chicken finally got out of the car and head back to Kent’s car. The black car started its engine and begins to leave. Afraid the black car would leave with the evidence, Barbara told Ruby to climb into the back seat so she could take control of the driver seat. Without thinking as the black car began to speed off, Barbara took her foot and punched the gas pedal. The car took off with a loud screeching sound and nose dive into the passenger side of the other car. The black car spun out of control and did a 360 flip on the strip. Barbara stumbles out of her car slightly dazed and went over to see if Ruby was alright. Seeing that Ruby was fine she head towards the black car. She barely took 2 steps towards the car before she heard a loud gunshot and saw a bullet ricochet off the front hood of the car. Realizing the other car is shooting at them; Barbara and Ruby quickly took cover and began shooting back. Man, what’s taking them so long Barbara thought as she took aim at one of the man’s chest. AHHHH!!! He cried out loud as Barbara’s bullet pierce through his chest. By then Kent had already took down Chicken and began to head over to help Barbara and Ruby. From far away they heard screeching tires as Kent drove by shooting at the 2 men. One of the guys took aim at his car and hit the gas pipe causing the car to burst into flames. “NOOOOO!!!” cried both girls as they witness Kent’s car flipped and tumble 4 ft from them. “You bastards, you’re going to pay for this” cried Barbara as she shoots numerous shots at the two standing men. At that same time they heard sirens approaching. The two men realizing they’ve been out numbered continue to firing until they ran out of ammo. Seeing they have ran out of ammo, Barbara took aim at one of the men’s head. “Stop Barb, you can’t do this. You’re a cop. If you kill him it’ll be murder” Ruby said firmly trying to stop her. Frustrated and angry, Barbara ran over to them and pistol whip the two men causing them to fall unconscious. She walks over to the burning car as tears stream down her eyes. She could hear the crunching of gravels and the slamming of doors as their help finally arrives. Felix walks up from behind, “Madam” he gently touches her shoulder. “I’m alright. We have a lot of work to do. The bag is in the car, that’s the evidence that we need. Please inform Kent’s family so they could prepare a decent funeral for him” she said as she wipes away her tears. Being in the force for over 5 yrs she knows death is part of their every day life. Kent just joined their team about a year ago. He was very quiet, easy going and friendly, she sees him as her brother. Often after work everyone in their team would go out for a drink to relax after a rough day at work. Seeing him go this way was too heart breaking for her.

Chapter 4

“Oh, look there’s Dr. Miu” whisper Vivian to another nurse at Queen Elizabeth Hospital. “Isn’t he gorgeous” asked Vivian. “Yea, I’m so in love with him. Too bad he never pays any attention to anyone of us” says the nurse with a sigh. “He’s the most available bachelor at this hospital and half of the nurses here are in love with him. How come I don’t ever see him with anyone” she asked with curiosity. “It’s odd…I’ve been working here for 2 yrs now and I have never seen that man smile” she went on whispering to Vivian. “Dr. Miu wasn’t always like this. He used to be very outgoing, always smiling, and easy to talk to. It’s been a long time since I’ve seen him smile myself” says Vivian with a sad look. “So what happen? What made him change” the nurse asked with interest. “I’m not sure, but it had something to do with the death of his fiancé. She had died from cancer.” “Oh my gosh” the young nurse gasp. “What a tragedy, he must’ve been devastated.” “Yeah, I heard he was like a lost zombie after her death. They were so in love, the perfect couple you could imagine. He loved her so much and still does to this very day” Vivian said shaking her head sadly. Right then Michael walked by. “Good morning, Dr. Miu” they replied. “Good mornin’ ladies” said Michael politely and continue down to his office. Michael Miu is a hematology/ oncology doctor at Queen Elizabeth Hospital. He walked down the long hallway and turned left into the cancer treatment center to his office.
“Good morning Dr. Miu” reply Gigi the receptionist as he walks in. “Mornin’ Gigi. Do I have any messages?” “Yes, Dr. Koo had called looking for you.” “Ok, thanks Gigi.” He went in his office closing the door behind him. On his desk were several reports he needs to dictate and review. He went to his desk and his eyes lands on Mei Ling’s picture. This is the picture he had taken of her helping out at the hospital as a volunteer. She was so beautiful in this picture with her shoulder length hair swept to the side, her smile sweet and tender as she helps out at the fundraiser for the cancer center. Starring at the picture, he couldn’t help but think of Barbara. He can’t forget how her eyes twinkle in the early morning light as loose strands of hair blowing around her face while she stares deep into his eyes. He relives the cute way she tilts her head to the side with that cute playful smile on her luscious lips. No he thought to himself; shaking his head, I can’t do this to Mei Ling. Why am I thinking of Barbara when I love Mei Ling? Feeling disgusted with himself he got up and went to the restroom to wash his face.
“Dr. Miu, please report to the ER” says a female voice over the intercom. Someone was paging him to the ER. He quickly dries his face and head out to the ER. “Dr. Miu, Dr. Koo needs to see you” says the nurse in the ER room. “Where is he?” “He’s in the second cubicle with a patient.” Michael went to the cubicle where Louise Koo is in. “What’s sup, Louis?” “Hey Michael, I need your help with this patient. He just collapsed outside of the hospital.” “Really? He looks perfectly healthy. Did you run any blood test on him?” “Yeah, we just withdraw some blood but the results won’t be in for another 2 hours. His lymph nodes are swollen through out his body” replied Louise. “Did you do a CT scan on him yet?” “I’m ordering it right now.” “Dr. Koo his blood pressure is rising and so is his heart rate” says Vivian. “What’s the reading” Michael asked glancing over at the nurse. “Blood pressure 150/ 70 and his heart beat is rising too fast” says Vivian in a panicky voice. Michael went over to observe. The patient is still unconscious. Michael lifts up the patient’s shirt and notices the swelling lymph nodes. But he also saw something else. “Louise, come here. Look, the patient has a deep cut on the side of his chest right below his armpit. No wonder his heart rate is rising, there’s too much pressure going into his heart and lungs. There’s no way for the air to escape. We need to do something to relieve the pressure or he’ll go into cardiac arrest.” Suddenly they heard a loud ***BEEPPPPPPPP!!!!**** Realizing the patient had went into cardiac arrest, Louise quickly grabs the electric shocker and tried to resuscitate the patient. “Ready, 100.. Stand back, 1..2..3... charge” said Louise. The loud **Beeeppppp!!!!** continues. “Again, Ready, 150, stand back, 1..2..3..charge.” “No use” says Michael impatiently. “We need to relieve the pressure right now before it’s too late.” Quickly, he picks up a scalpel and went over to the patient. Without thinking he made a small incision right next to the patient’s chest. Right when he did that a quick “whooshhhing” sound escape from the patient’s chest. Blood gush out like a water hose hitting him in the face, drenching his shirt and the wall with blood. Vivian stood there shock at what had just happened. She regains her composure and found a towel for him to clean himself. **Beep, beep, beep.** The heart monitor starts to beep back to normal. “Whew, that was close” says Louise. Looking over at him, he smile and complimented Michael on his quick thinking. “Only you would do something like this” says Louise shaking his head. “Thanks, I guess I better get clean up” says Michael standing there drench in blood. “We need to admit him so we could do some observation.” “Yeah, I agree with you” says Louise. “Have we contact his family yet” Michael asked. “No” replied Vivian. “What’s his name?” “His ID says Tony Yung.” “Is there a number?” “I don’t have it but I have his cell phone here. Maybe you can go through it” says Vivian. “Yeah, give it to me. I’ll clean myself up and then I’ll go through it” says Michael.

Chapter 5
Walking back to his room he went into the restroom and stripped out of his blood stained clothes. He turned on the water and began scrubbing the dried blood from his face and hair. He turns his face up towards the water, letting it drip down his face and masculine body. Rinsing himself off he got out and quickly gets dress and went straight to work. Back at his desk he scrolls through the phone list and found what he was looking for.
Back at the police station, Barbara sat deep in thought as she goes through the reports and examines the evidence. They had arrested 2 of Simon Yams most competent men and recovered 5 million dollars in US money. The chief had praised her on the success of this operation. The success of this operation cost a life of a good cop she thought bitterly. “Arrgghhh!!!” says Barbara out loud as she pushes the papers aside. She rests her face in her hands and looked around. Everyone was quiet and solemn not their usual self. Everyone seems lost in their own little world. Barbara’s eyes wander over to Kent’s desk. There were piles of reports stacked neatly on his desk waiting for him to come back and finish up. Barbara’s eyes begin to blur as it slowly sinks in; Kent isn’t coming back. She closes her eyes to hold back the tears that were threatening to fall. Biting her lips, she took a deep breath and got up from her desk and went outside for a breath of fresh air. As she walked outside she saw her dad crossing the street in a hurry, with a worry look on his face. She rushes over to him “Ba Ba, what’s wrong” Barbara asked worriedly. All out of breath Mr. Yung managed to say “Tony, he’s..” he stopped as he tries to catch his breath. “Ba Ba, what happened to Tony” she asked all concern. She could no longer control the strain from her voice. “I received a phone call from the hospital half an hour ago. The man on the other line said Tony had collapsed outside of the hospital” “What?!” exclaimed Barbara in bewilderment. Her head began to spin as she tries to absorb everything that is happening. Arrrgghhhh!!! She thought, first Kent and now Tony. She closes her eyes, her hands balled up into a fist. Calmed down she told herself as she took several deep breathes.
“It’s ok Ba Ba. Let’s go to the hospital and see how Tony is doing. I’ll call Ruby to let her know so she could meet us there” she says as she puts her arm behind his back and steer him towards her car. “Oh Barb, do you think Tony would be alright? I hope nothing has happened to him.” And on he went rambling on more to himself than to her. Barbara silently said a quick prayer for Tony as she ushers him into the car. Barbara and Mr. Yung rushed through the corridors and straight to the front desk. The nurse was busy talking on the phone and didn’t bother to acknowledge Barbara’s presence. “Ahemmmm” says Barbara as she stared at the nurse through knitted brows. The nurse turns back to Barbara with a frown on her face. “Yes? Don’t you see I’m on the phone” she asked as she narrows her eyes. “Well, you’re suppose to be working, not chit chatting on the phone. This is a hospital, not a supermarket” Barbara snapped. Seeing that Barbara isn’t the type to be pushed around, the nurse quickly hangs up the phone and tried to help her. “How can I assist you today” asked the same nurse. “I received a phone call saying my brother is here. I need to see him.” “What’s his name?” “It’s Tony Yung” Barbara said impatiently. “Ok, let’s see. Alright he’s on the 3rd floor at the intensive care unit” the nurse replied. “Let’s go Dad, this way.” She quickly pulls her dad towards the elevator and left without saying a word. Right when they got to the elevator, she heard someone yelled “Wait.” She held the door open for him as he came running in. “Thanks” he says when he was safely inside. “No problem” she replies without looking up to see who it was. Their hands brush against each other as they both reach over to press the button for the 3rd floor. They quickly pulled their hands back as a sharp stinging sensation went through them. “Oh, uh, excuse me” he says as he glances over to see who it was. His jaw drops slightly as he realizes it was Barbara. At that same instance, she looked up and their eyes locked. She couldn’t disguise the surprise look from her face as she stares into the handsome face of Michael Miu.

A warm rush slowly spreads to her cheeks as she smiles at him shyly. “Hi” he says with a warm smile. “Hi, what a pleasant surprise” Barbara says with a smile as she continues to fiddle with her hands. “So who are you here to see” he asked Barbara still not taking his eyes off of her. Feeling his gaze on her she shyly answered him “We’re here to see my brother.” “Your brother” he asked with a raised eyebrow. “Yea, we received a phone call from someone here at the hospital” she said now turning to Michael with a worried look. “So what’s his name” Michael asked trying to help. “Tony Yung.” “Tony Yung” Michael repeat looking shock. Did he heard right; the patient’s life he had saved earlier was her brother. What a coincidence he thought to himself. “Michael” he looked up, surprise to hear her call his name. The sweet sound of her voice and the way she stood there with her hair pulled back in a ponytail remind him so much of Mei Ling. “Mei..” he caught himself. “Huh??” Barbara gave him a puzzled look as she raised her perfectly shaped eyebrow. “Um…Sorry.. I was just thinking out loud. Did you want to ask me something” he asked with an apologetic smile. “Yea, I asked what you do here at the hospital.” “Oh I work here as a specialist, treating cancer patients” he said smiling sheepishly. “I see. So where are you heading to now” she asked curiously. “I’m doing my round checking up on the patients.” Ding! The elevator stopped at the 3rd floor and slowly slid open; Michael held the door open for Barbara and Mr. Yung to leave. “Thanks” she said as they turned and went to look for Tony’s room. “Here it is” Barbara whispered to her dad. Michael followed close behind.
Inside Tony’s room, it was completely dark except for the night light at the corner of the night stand. They could see the outline of his body lying motionless on the bed. With the help of the dim light, she could make out the outlines of tubes running from his nose to his mouth. Her eyes began to tear up seeing Tony like this. **beep..beep….beep..** Everyone stood there quietly observing Tony. The only sound in the room was coming from the constant beeping of the heart monitor. **beep…beep…beep…** From where she was standing she heard pounding footsteps running towards their room. Being a cop, you’re always alert; slowly and quickly she slipped behind the door. Right as she got behind the door, it flew open and someone came rushing in. She grabs the person by the shoulder and twists her arm against her back forcing the assailant against the wall. Barbara small as she is is quite strong for her size. Michael’s jaw dropped his eyes wide with surprise for the second time today. He didn’t know she was a police officer; seeing her do that was mind boggling. “Barb, what are you doing” her dad asked. “It’s only Ruby, let her go.” “Oops. Sorry, Ruby I didn’t know it was you. Why didn’t you say anything before bursting through the door like a crazy lady” says Barbara sheepishly. “I wasn’t thinking. Where is he” she asked. “Oh Tony” she gasped as she ran towards him with tears streaming down her cheeks. “What happen” she cried as she reached for his hands. “Ruby, you need to calm down” said Barbara. Nodding her head she began to wipe her tears away. “So what happen? Why is he like this?” They both turned to Michael for an explanation.
“I’m not sure how he got here. But I was told he was found unconscious outside of the hospital and one of the nurse brought him in” says Michael. “How come he’s still unconscious; isn’t he supposed to be awake by now” Barbara asked with concern. “Regaining conscious depends on the person’s mentality. I can’t put a time on it. Your brother needs to be hospitalize so we can do further observation” he answered. “So there’s no telling when he’ll wake up” she asked with a frown. “Not at this time” said Michael quietly. She has a nagging feeling that he wasn’t telling her everything. He picks up Tony’s chart and began to go through it. Still holding the chart he says he has other patients to see and turns to leave the room. Barbara follow right behind him. Once outside she caught up to him. “Michael” she said placing her hand on his arm. “May I have a word with you?” “Sure, let’s talk in my office.”
Walking down the hallway she turned and stopped to face him, she was about to open her mouth to say something but Michael stopped her. Still holding Tony’s medical records in his hands he told her to follow him inside. Once inside he began looking through it again. She saw his facial expression change as he went through the chart. His frown deepens as he continues to read the chart. Finally he looked up after what seem like an eternity. Taking a deep breath he looked over at Barbara who was waiting anxiously for his answers. “Barbara” he began. “You need to sit down. I don’t know how to tell you this. The blood test doesn’t say much except his white blood cells is reproducing abnormally. That explains why his lymph nodes are swollen. The CT scan shows there are some calcification in his chest. I can’t determine the diagnosis yet but it looks like it’s probably cancer.” Stunned, Barbara slowly gets up backing away from him. Her big round eyes shimmered in the light as tears begin to form at the corners of her eyes. It can’t be true she thought. The word just kept repeating itself over and over in her head. She could no longer hear what Michael was saying. “No..no..no..” she said in frustration, this can’t be happening. She looked up and stared at Michael her face very disoriented. At that moment, all Michael wanted to do was hold her in his arms and tell her everything is going to be alright. It took all his strength not to walk over to her and kiss the tears that’s staining her beautiful face. Barbara stood looking down and began to cry softly. Seeing her in so much distress and pain was unbearable. He walked over to her and put his arms around her shoulder. Feeling his arms around her she turned and rests her head on his chest and continues to cry. “There must be some kind of mistake. He’s too young to die” she moans into his chest. “It’s alright” Michael said comfortingly. “He’s not going to die, it’s still treatable” Michael says softly as he rests his chin on her head. Standing there holding her in his arms he couldn’t stop the knots that were forming in his stomach as his heart begin to do somersault in the air. Holding her in his arms felt so right; his heart began to beat faster as he felt the warmth of her tiny little body pressed against his.
They stood there a moment longer holding each other, both not wanting to part. Though they just met, Barbara can’t help but feel like she has known him for a very long time. She doesn’t know what it is that make her feel that way. There’s no denying that she is very attracted to him. Being in his arm she felt so safe and secure like there’s no worry in this world. She feels she no longer has to be the strong person that she tries to be. The way he touches her hair and caresses her neck as he held her in his arms while whispering comforting words to her brought butterflies to her stomach. She wish she could be in his arms forever and didn’t have to go back out there to face her family.
“Knock, knock”. Someone was at the door, they quickly pulled away from each other as Louis Koo walked in. “Hey Michael, there you are. I’ve been looking all over for you” said Louis with a grin as he notice Michael with Barbara. Taking a closer look at Barbara he turned to Michael with a puzzle look. He was taken back at the close resemblance of Barbara and Mei Ling. He quickly regains his composure and turned back to Barbara with a smile. “Hi I’m Dr. Louis Koo” he says as he reaches out to shake her hand. “So you’re the famous Louis Koo, I’ve been hearing so much about” says Barbara. “Oh, is that so” asked Louis in a flirtatious voice as he raises his eyebrows at Michael. “I’m well known I assume” Louis said playfully. “No don’t get it the wrong way, I’m Barbara. Kristy’s room mate” says Barbara as she chuckles at his response. “So you’re my Princess Kristy’s personal maid that she has spoke so highly about” says Louis with a laugh. “Yea, I guess you can say that” Barbara said with a small smile. “hmm.. What a small world this is” he says rubbing his chin like he’s deep in thought. Barbara laughed again and shook her head. Now she sees why Kristy is so in love with him. Louis has such a great personality.
“Sorry to interrupt you two” Michael says “but did you need me for something” he asked Louis. “Oh, that’s right I almost forgot.” “Here” he says handing Michael the final report of the full body scan. “This is the result for that patient upstairs” says Louis. “Who, Tony Yung” Michael asked as he glanced over at Barbara. Her face paled slightly at the mention of her brother’s name. “Yeah, could we talk outside?” “No, it’s ok. Barbara here is his sister. So if we need to discuss anything it’s better we do it in front of her” he says. “Alright” said Louis as he went over to Barbara. “Let’s all sit down and discuss this.” Michael came over and sat next to Barbara and Louis sat across from her. Looking up from the paper Louis still can’t get over the resemblance between Barbara and Mei Ling. His eyes went from Barbara to Michael who is sitting next to her trying to comfort her as they wait for him to start. I hope Michael doesn’t use her as a substitute for Mei Ling he thought. He knows how much Michael loved Mei Ling and how hard it was for him to moved on after she was gone. Luckily, he finally pulled out of it and decided to go back to school to specialize in hematology and oncology. Being only an ER doctor at that time, Michael couldn’t help but felt he could have done something more to save Mei Ling if he knew more about her sickness. Now 5 yrs later he’s one of the best doctors in its field.

“Here Michael,” Louis said as he pulled out the labs. Both Michael and Barbara turned to look at Louis. “Did you read the results from the labs yet?” “Yea, I have” Michael reply. “So what do you think is best to do” Louis asks him. Looking at the full body scan result he hesitates before he answered. “The results are not clear. It just confirms that he has cancer but it doesn’t say what kind.” He turns to look at Barbara and continue on. “We need to take a sample of his tissue to determine what type of cancer he has. We can’t make the decision without your family’s consent” he says to Barbara. Barbara glances over to Louis to see what he has to say. “Taking a tissue sample is something I would recommend too” Louis says. “So what do you say Barbara?” “I know you guys need an answer right away. I’ll go ahead and sign the paperwork” she says quietly. “Ok” says Louis getting up. “I’ll go get the papers for you and have the nurse schedule the appt. for tomorrow. Michael is one of the best doctors here so you don’t have to worry Barbara.” “Wait,” she says with a pleading look. “Please don’t tell my dad. He’s too old to handle the truth. I’ll try to find a way to break it to him.” Both men nod their heads agreeing to keep it quiet from her dad until she finds away to tell him.
“Thanks” she says as she gets up to follow Louis outside. She went over to the front desk and begins filling out the registration forms. Michael alone again in his office sat thinking about what had just happen. He saw Louis giving him that look earlier and know what he’s thinking. Is he really attracted to Barbara or is he substituting her for Mei Ling? He sat there thinking about how different they are. Mei Ling was the quiet, soft spoken type. She would not say things to upset people and always think of others before herself. Barbara on the other hand is outspoken and strong minded. Though she appears to be tough somehow he has a feeling like she’s putting up a front. He felt it when he was holding her when she was crying in his arm.
Back in Tony’s room, both Ruby and Mr. Yung looked up as they heard her came in. “Has he woke up yet” Barbara asked in a whisper. Ruby shook her head and softly said “No.” Barbara turned and looked at her dad who looks so tired and distress. “Dad, why don’t I take you home for you to rest? When Tony wakes up I’ll call and let you know.” “Alright” he says with a sigh. “I’ll go home myself, you stay here with Ruby. Remember to call as soon as he wakes up.” “Yes dad” she says as she walks her dad to the elevator. “I need to go to the market and buy some Chinese herbs to cook for Tony. He’ll need it to recover his strength” he said to Barbara as they wait for the elevator. Knowing her dad can’t sit still with Tony still unconscious she didn’t bother arguing with him. “Ok dad, don’t over work yourself” she says trying to smile as she quickly kiss her dad as the elevator door slid open. Michael came stepping out as her dad step into the elevator. “Mr. Yung you’re leaving” Michael ask politely with a smile. “Yes, I need to cook some porridge and protein food for Tony to eat to recover.” Michael looked over at Barbara and saw the pain flash through her eyes. He looked back at Mr. Yung assuming Barbara hasn’t told him yet. “I guess I shouldn’t keep you any longer than Mr. Yung. Bye” Michael says as he waits for the elevator door to close.
Once the door closed he turned to Barbara. “You haven’t told him?” She stood there and shook her head. “I can’t, it’ll break his heart. Tony’s the only one to carry on the Yung’s name. It’ll devastate him” she says as she closes her eyes to prevent the tears from falling. “Don’t worry. I’ll tell him when the time is right. You said so yourself, it’s still treatable. Right?” “Right” he said wanting to believe it himself. It’s treatable he thought but it doesn’t mean it’s curable. GRRRRR!! He looked down at Barbara. “Sorry” she said sheepishly rubbing her stomach. “I haven’t eaten yet.” “It’s ok” he said smiling showing a slight dimple at the corner of his mouth. “I haven’t either. Would you like to join me?” Surprised and over joy he had asked her to lunch she looked up with a small smile. “Yeah, I’ll like that. Let me tell Ruby where I’m going and see if she wants anything. I’ll meet you downstairs.” “Ok, I’ll check on one more patient and I’ll meet up with you” he says with a big smile on his face. He can’t help feeling excited about his lunch date with Barbara. It’s been a long time he has felt this way.
Barbara went back to Tony’s room and saw he have woke up and was talking to Ruby. “Hi sis” Tony said in a drowsy voice. “Tony!! Are you ok” asks Barbara excitedly. “We were so worried. What happened?” “Whoa sis, relax. I just woke up. We’re not playing 20 questions right now, are we” he asked jokingly. Barbara rolled her eyes. “Fine then I won’t act like I care so much. This is the kind of thanks I get” she says looking away pretending to be mad. “Aw, come on Barb you know you love me” Tony says with a little laugh. “Ouch” he says as he felt a sharp shooting pain went through his body. Barbara rushed to his side as Ruby bent over him to see what was wrong. Hee heeee… Tony laughed softly. “Gotcha!!” “TONY!!” Both Barbara and Ruby yelled. “How could you joke at a time like this” Ruby scolded him as she pulls her arms away. He quickly caught it before she got out of reach. “Comm’n babe, it’s not often where I have 2 beautiful ladies wait on me like a king.” “You’re unbelievable Tony” Ruby says as she gently hit him in the arm. “I warned you before” Barbara says teasingly as she watches the two of them. They were so in love, how could she have the heart to tell Ruby. Blinking back tear that’s beginning to form she quickly asked “Ruby you want anything to eat? I’m going out to grab something to eat.” “I’m hungry too” Tony said. “Well no one asked you. I’ll call dad to let him know you’re up so he could bring you some soup.” “Aww” he groaned. “Not dad’s soup. You know how hard it is to eat it” he asked in an exaggerated tone of voice. “Be quiet it Tony” Ruby said with a smile. “You are so mean. You know how worried your dad was? If he hears what you’re saying now he’ll be so mad.” Tony pulled her closer to the bed and hugged her. “I know he would. That’s why I never said anything. I rather have my wifey here cook it for me” he said teasingly. “Tony” said Ruby shyly as she pulls away. Barbara shook her head and left. Seeing that Tony’s ok Ruby probably doesn’t even have to eat. The love Tony has for her is enough to keep her full Barbara thought with a small smile.
She got to the lobby and saw Michael standing there waiting for her. The moment he saw her, his face light up with a bright smile. Barbara rushed over to him. “Sorry it took a little longer than I thought” she said happily. “Tony’s awake.” “That’s great” Michael said. “Have you told him yet?” “No” Barbara said shaking her head sadly. why did I have to ask her that he thought wanting to kick himself. “Sorry, I didn’t mean to upset you again” he said sincerely. “It’s ok” Barbara said hearing the sincerity in his voice. “Where should we go?” “I know this little café down at the corner. It’s really good” Michael says happy that she has forgiven him. “Ok, let’s go there” Barbara says. They walked to the café in silence. Both wanting to say something but didn’t know how to start.
They got to the café and were seated alone in a dark corner. The waiter came by “what would you and your girlfriend like to order today” he asked Michael. Michael didn’t bother to correct the waiter; instead he asked him what the day’s special was. “We have the love bird lunch special which comes with 2 entries of either choice of steak or chicken, soup, salad and dessert.” Hearing the waiter referred her as Michael’s girlfriend made her blushed slightly. Why didn’t he correct the waiter she thought as she smile behind the menu. He looked over at Barbara and asked “Would you like that?” “Yeah, that’s fine. Can I have the chicken please” she said as she puts the menu down. “Ok, what would you like to drink?” “Water” they both said at the same time. “I’ll be right back” he said as he gathered the menu. Smiling they both looked at each other shyly. Say something to her he said to himself. But he couldn’t open his mouth; he was dumbstruck by her beauty and big round eyes. Embarrass that he kept staring at her; she tried to think of something to say. “Thanks for trying to cheer me up earlier. I really appreciate it.” “It’s ok, I know what you’re going through.” “You do” she asked curiously. “It’s a long story. I rather not talk about it” he said his voice had a hint of sadness to it. “So why didn’t you correct the waiter when he called me your girlfriend” she asked with a shy smile trying to change the subject. “Uh…I thought it wasn’t necessary” he said with a smile. “Well, if your girlfriend walked by she might get the wrong idea” Barbara said as she plays with the straw in her cup. “I don’t have a girlfriend so there’s no need to worry” he said with a smile knowing where she’s trying to get at. Pretty smart he thought. Happy to hear he’s still available she asked “Ok tell me, why an attractive guy like you is still available?” Not wanting to bring Mei Ling up he casually said “I haven’t find anyone worth pursuing?” Barbara looked over at him with a raised eyebrow; thingyy aren’t we she thought. Michael saw her reaction quickly corrected himself. “Don’t take it the wrong way. I haven’t been with anyone for almost 5yrs.” Barbara couldn’t help but smile at what he said. “So it’s been all work and no play for you huh” she said playfully. He smiled “I guess you can say that.” He leaned back against his seat and stared at her some more. He has known her for only 1 day but the attraction he feels towards her is beyond anything. It wasn’t the instant attraction he felt towards her; it’s her personality that caught his attention. She’s bold at times and very intelligent. Remembering what he saw earlier in Tony’s room he asked “So what do you do for a living? You already know I’m a doctor but I don’t even know what you do. Those moves back there in the room were something.” Hearing what he said made her nearly choked on her water. She had forgotten all about that incident with Ruby. A little embarrass about her outburst she quickly replies “I’m a cop.” “Wow” says Michael slightly blown away. “That explains it” he said in amusement. “Hey are you making fun of me” she asked in a pouting way. Laughing he shook his head at her childish act. This girl is really something he thought still amused. “No, I’m not. I ‘m surprise to see a girl your size could throw a punch like that.” “I can do a lot more than you know” she said jokingly as she took a sip of her water. “Look our food is here” he said as the waiter came by their table. “Great I’m starving” she said with a small smile. They ate in silence enjoying one another’s company. She could feel his gaze on her as she ate her food. She couldn’t help but enjoy the attention she’s getting from him. This guy is hot and they are connecting so well she thought as she took the last bite of her food. “Uggh…I’m full” she said. “How about you?” “Yea, same here” he said glancing at his watch. “Great it’s 3pm.” “What?” she exclaimed. “I have to call my dad and let him know Tony’s up.” Tony?!!?!! She had forgotten about him. How could she forget she thought wanting to kick herself. She’s not usually like this. Remembering Tony and his illness suddenly made her feel sick. Lunch with Michael was great, but having to head back home and face her dad and Tony is another story. She hasn’t thought of a way to break the news to them. Seeing the troubled look on her face Michael came over to her to see what was wrong. “Barbara, are you ok?” Looking up she could see he was concerned. “Yea, I’m ok it’s just I haven’t told Tony and Ruby yet about his sickness” she said sadly. Michael nodded his head and asked “Is Ruby Tony’s girlfriend?” “Yeah” she said glumly. “Maybe it’s best I tell them myself” Michael says. “Why is that” she asked slightly confused. “Because when my fiancé was diagnosed with cancer it was hard for me to tell her. Louis end up breaking the news to her. When a person is ill the last thing they want is to have their love one hurt. They rather take the entire burden on themselves.” She thought about what he said. “Wait a minute” she said looking confuse. “You have a fiancé? You just said you didn’t have a girlfriend” she said accusingly. “That was a long time ago” Michael said softly. Hearing the pain in Michael’s voice at the mention of his fiancé told her to drop it. “Sorry Michael” she said softly. “It’s nothing” he said with a tight smile. “Let’s head back to the hospital.” “Wait, I have to call my dad first. It’ll be quick.” She pulled out her cell phone to call her dad. “Hello, dad Tony’s up. He’s ok. No don’t worry. Ok, bye.” She hangs up the phone and turned to Michael with a sulking look. “Here we go” she said glumly.
Back at the hospital they head to the elevator and up to Tony’s room. Before they could get to Tony’s room they heard someone calling for them to stop. They turned to see Louis hurrying towards them. “Glad to have caught you. Have you told your brother yet” he asked Barbara. “No, not yet” she said. “Great.” “Huh” says Barbara and Michael confused. “I’m so sorry Barbara; I don’t know how to tell you this. Apparently Tony’s tests somehow got mixed up with another patient. This is the first time this has ever happened. We have retested him and results are normal ” he says apologizing for the mistake. Barbara looked over at Michael her eyes wide with joy. “So my brother doesn’t have cancer” she asked in disbelief. “This is so bizarre” she said ecstatically. She suddenly felt light as if 20 lbs have been lifted off her shoulder. She jumped up and down hugging Michael tightly. Michael smiled holding her in his arms delighted to see she’s no longer troubled by all this madness. “Thank you so much” she gushed happily as tears rolled down her cheeks. “You don’t know how much this means to me.” “Hey, comm’n Barbara you can stop crying now” he says as he gently lifts up her chin and look into her eyes. “I know” she said sniffling. “I’m just so happy and relieved. Today’s been a nightmare but I’m glad it’s over now.” Realizing she’s still in his arms she began to pull away. “I’m so sorry” she said embarrass as her cheeks turned bright red. “It’s ok” Michael said with a gentle smile. “We all need a hug now and then.
