Crossing Path

Beep! Beep! Beep!

Mei Ling looked at her alarm clock 8:30 a.m. Oh no! I’m late. Mei Ling jumped up from her bed and ran to the bathroom. Kent is waiting for me downstairs and he’s going to be so mad at me. Mei Ling rushed in the bathroom and quickly got ready. The phone rang and the caller id showed Kent Tong’s cell. Mei Ling was afraid to pick up the phone because she didn’t want to get yell at. As she ran downstairs she sees Kent waiting in the car impatiently. She got in the car quietly and gave him a kiss on his cheek. She had a flashback of her childhood. When she was in high school she would come home late and snuck in the house quietly afraid of waking up her mom. Somehow she had that feeling with Kent. She was more afraid of him than anything.

Mei Ling: I’m sorry honey!
Kent: You know I have to be at the station at 9 today, but you always make me late.
Mei Ling: I’m sorry! I think I pressed snooze more often than I should. She giggled little.

The drive to work continued in silence.

During the drive to work Mei Ling thought about her relationship with Kent. She’s been with Kent for 2 years now. She remember the first year, he was so sweet to her. Kent would call her every morning waking her up and surprising her with flowers. He stopped doing all the sweet stuff. Mei Ling didn’t think too much about it because she thinks Kent is just stress out about work. She noticed Kent’s attitude changed dramatically. He begun getting mad easily and tend to get jealous with every guy she talks to. She thought to herself, if he gets jealous that means he just loves me a lot. Mei Ling smiled and glance at Kent to see his face expression. Kent’s expression hasn’t change; he still had the serious look on his face just as when she stepped in the car.

They arrived at the station and Kent parked the car at his usual spot.

Kent lean over and gave Mei Ling a hug.
Kent: I got to run honey. I’ll see you later.
Mei Ling: Have a good day honey!

Kent ran in the station and left Mei Ling still sitting in the car. Mei Ling grabbed her purse and got out of the car. Mei Ling felt the heat as she stepped out of the car. It was mid June and the sun was beaming brightly. As she walked in the station, she was try to multitask unbuttoning her blouse and at the same time reaching her in her purse searching for her security badge. She was focusing so hard that she tripped going up the staircase and fell backward. Mei Ling let out a cried: Ouch!!!!!!!!!!! She fell backward and land on a cushion. When she got up, she realized she fell against someone’s chest.


Part 2

She heard a man moan behind her.

Mei Ling turned around and stared deeply in Kiu Wai eyes. They stared at each other for about 30 seconds. Until she realized she was extremely close to him. She could smell his strong aftershave.

Mei Ling: Oh! I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to fall on you.
Kiu Wai didn’t move nor reply, he continued staring in her big round eyes.
Mei Ling: Are you okay?

Mei Ling helped Kiu Wai up. She didn’t realize how tall and attractive he was. When he spoke she couldn’t help but noticed his deep dimples.

Kiu Wai: Oh! I’m sorry! I don’t know what happen. One moment I’m walking up the staircase then all of sudden I’m on the ground.
Mei Ling: What a coincidence? I was trying to multitask and I fell backward and land on something hard.
Kiu Wai: That something hard is me. I hope you enjoy your fall Miss.

Mei Ling giggled and let out a smile.

Mei Ling: Thanks for lending me your chest to land on. I appreciate it. And here I thought I was the only clumsiest person.
Kiu Wai: You are, but this time I beat you to it.

Mei Ling: You’re funny. Is this how you always pick up on the girls?
Kiu Wai: Yes! I tried to look for the clumsiest one because they’re the cutest.
Mei Ling: Hey!
Kiu Wai: Just kidding!

They shared another laughed.

Mei Ling: I never see you before. Are you new?
Kiu Wai: Yes! Today is my first day. I’m Kiu Wai, by the way.
Kiu Wai extends his hand out to shake hers.
Mei Ling: I’m Mei Ling
Kiu Wai: Pleasure to meet you Mei Ling.
Mei Ling: Same here!
Kiu Wai: I got to go, but hey if you ever need something to fall back on. I’m here for you.

Mei Ling laughed again.
Kiu Wai went in the building and shut the door.

In Kiu Wai thoughts…
Be strong Kiu Wai. Don’t look back! I don’t want to look desperate. What if she’s not looking at me, then I’ll look like an idiot. I seen her in movies before, but I got to admit she’s a lot cuter in person. Those eyes are so magnificent! When I look into her eyes I get lost in them. I can stare at them all day.

Kiu Wai was long gone, but Mei Ling still stared at the doorway. She was hoping that he will look back. He didn’t! Something about this encounter gave Mei Ling a strange feeling. A feeling she never had before. She was excited, happy and confused all at once.

Here’s a prequel to Crossing Paths told by Miu Kiu Wai.


That was the day.

I remember the day as it was yesterday. It was my first day working at TVB Station. I was pulling in the parking lot when I saw her. At age 25, I thought I seen all the beautiful women in the world. Boy! Was I was wrong? I never saw any beauty like hers. She was petite, but her eyes were the biggest I ever seen. Her face was angel-like and when she smiled it was bright as the sun that morning. She was lost in a world of her own. As she was making her way towards the building, I noticed she was digging in her purse looking for something. I pulled up at the next available parking space. Jump out of the car and followed her. I stayed far behind because I didn’t want to frighten her. The last thing I want is to alarm her.

As she was making her way up the staircase, her eyes was still stuck in her purse digging for an item. Then she tripped and I panic. The last thing I want was to see her get hurt. So I did what any person would do. I threw my body on the floor where she was going to land and prepared myself. Ouch! I screamed. Thank goodness she was light, I didn’t feel any pain. Or maybe I did feel pain, but at that moment having her on me I was numb. We both got up and stared deeply in each other eyes. We were standing extremely close. She pulled back quickly. At that moment, everything was a blurred. I see her mouth moving, but I didn’t hear anything.

I snapped back to reality. She was apologetic and showed concern for my well being. I felt guilty because I really wasn’t in any pain at all. I was just in state of shock. I thought to myself, how can someone be so glorious? Being a charmer that I was, I started a conversation. We flirted and laughed. Even though the encounter wasn’t long, it was the best conversation I had in a long time. She’s even a lot cuter when she smiles. She had a fun sense of humor and great personality. I didn’t want the conversation to end, but I felt it was time for me to leave. We said our goodbyes and parted ways. I made my way up the staircase and forced myself not to look back.

As I walked away, then I felt it. I felt the pain. I realized the pain wasn’t from the fall, but it was from us parting. Why do I feel hurt now?

As I sit here and tell you this story, I think about that day that I met her. For years, the encounter has reminisced again in my mind. I can’t stop thinking about her. Why am I still so hurt? I finally realized I fell in love with her at first sight. If I could change anything in this lifetime, I would not walk away from her that day. I would be more aggressive and tell her that I love her. Tell her that I can’t live my life without her. Tell her that I didn’t fell on purpose, but to protect her from getting hurt. My only regret was not being able to hold and protect her from all the evil in this world. I had the opportunity to protect her, but I walked away. I’m telling you this story today because I want you believe that love does exist. People get blinded by love and lose their opportunity. Opportunity comes once in a life time and if you don’t take it, you’ll lose it forever. Just as how I lost her forever. I will always and still remember that day. That was the day, the day I met Yung Mei Ling.
