“I think you need to go home and rest. Today’s been a roller coaster ride for you. You’re probably emotionally drained” he said putting a protective arm around her shoulder. “Thanks, maybe you’re right. I guess I’ll have to give you a rain check for the walk then” she said giving him a toothy smile. “You know you do” he said as he gathered up the blanket.
They drove back to the police station in silence. Barbara sat deep in thought still disturb by the negative vibe she had felt. Something isn’t right and it’s frustrating her because she can’t put a finger on it. Glancing over Michael could see how troubled she is. “Listen Barbara” Michael said breaking the silence with his deep masculine voice. “I could follow you home if you like” his voice full of concern. The sound of his voice broke her out of her trance as she look over at him. “You want to follow me home” she asked trying not to laugh. She could tell he was being sincere and didn’t want to offend him in any way. “Did you forget what I do for a living” she asked raising an eyebrow. “No… I didn’t forget. I just thought you’ll feel better with me being there” he said slyly. “Oh… really” she said rolling her eyes not believing a word he said. “Yeah… Really” he said mocking her as his car came to a screeching halt. “Why are we stopping” she asked forgetting where they’re at. “Because” he said reaching across her seat to open the door his face inches from hers. He was so close she could smell the mint on his breath and the sweet scent of his cologne. “We’re here” he said finishing his sentence. She looked up realizing they were in front of the police station. “Oops… Sorry Michael” she said with a sheepish smile. “I got carried away. Ok back to your question. Thanks but no thanks” she said with a wink. “I can take of myself.” “Alrighty” he said giving in. “If you say so…You have my number just call me if you need anything.” “You know I will” she said with a wave and turned to her car as Michael drove off.
She walked down to the parking structure where her car was parked. “Good evening Madam” a young uniformed police officer greeted her at the entry way. “Good evening” she replied courteously and continues to her car; she wasn’t in the mood for small talk. She walked down the stairway to structure 3 where her car was at. Creeeeeekkk….!!!! What was that she thought to herself. She jerked her head up and looked around. The parking lot was empty except for a few cars. There was no one around except for her. She stopped in her track waiting for the noise to come again. She held her breath and waited. Silence… Nothing…Arrgggg… Barbara get a grip on yourself she told herself in frustration. She took another step towards her car and then she heard it again. Creeeeekkkk….creeeeeeekkkkkk….There it is again I’m not hearing things. Someone was coming up the metal stairway. Swiftly and quietly she slipped behind one of the cars.
She sat crouching low so no one could see her. From where she was she could hear the pounding footstep coming closer and closer. Barbara crouched low holding her breath waiting for the right opportunity to strike. Looking underneath the car she saw someone walked by in a pair of white tennis shoes. Whomever it was walked past her then stopped and slowly began walking back the other way. This was the chance she was waiting for. She sprang up from her crouching position and slid across the hood of the car. The loud crunching noise from the front of the hood startled the person stopping her in her track.
Barbara didn’t give the person a chance to react. She drew out her pistol aiming it at her back as she came up to her from behind. “Stop where you’re at” she hollered to the other person. “Turn around and put your hands up. Don’t do anything stupid or I’ll blow your brain out” she growled. She turned around slowly with her hands in the air her face a mask of terror. “BARBARA” she exclaimed with relief. “KRISTY” Barbara exclaimed with disbelief as she puts her gun away. “What were you thinking? You could have been killed or seriously injured. Don’t ever do that again” she exclaim scolding Kristy like a child. “Sorry… You scared me half to death” Kristy said with a tight laugh.
“So what are you doing her? I thought you had a date with Louis tonight” Barbara asked raising an eyebrow at Kristy. Kristy remains quiet and didn’t answer her question. That’s odd, Barbara thought to herself; noticing her best friend’s odd behavior. Something is wrong; Kristy is usually bubbly and upbeat, she’s never this mellow. Not wanting to seem nosy Barbara went on like nothing was wrong and linked her arms through Kristy steering her towards her car. Inside the car she waited patiently for her friend to tell her what was bothering her. Knowing Kristy it wouldn’t be long before she spills her problems to her. The ride back home was silent by the time they got home it was already 10:30.
Barbara opened the door to their apartment and went in Kristy followed close behind. Kicking the door close with her foot Barbara turned to Kristy with the ok I’m ready look. Kristy continues to ignore her. “Fine” she said. “If you’re not going to tell me what’s bothering you then I’m going to bed” Barbara said impatiently. Hearing the edginess in her friend’s voice Kristy looked up her eyes brimming with tears. “Kristy, you better spill it now” Barbara demanded seeing how distress her friend has become. “What’s wrong” she asked going over to where Kristy was sitting. “Oh Barbara, I don’t know what to do” she cried throwing her arms around Barbara. “Hey, it’s ok… you have to let me know what’s wrong so I can try and help” Barbara said comfortingly as she stroke Kristy’s hair. “Now tell me, what’s going on.” Pulling away Kristy wipes her tears with the back of her hands. Taking a deep breath Kristy turned to Barbara and told her. “I’m pregnant” she whispered softly. “Oh” Barbara managed to muster; she was too shock to say anything else. “I don’t know how to tell my family or Louis. I don’t know what to do” she cried in frustration. “Wait, you haven’t told Louis yet” Barbara asked in shock.
Kristy shook her head. “When did you found out? How come you didn’t tell him” Barbara asked incredulously. “I just found out today. You’re the first person I’ve told. He doesn’t know yet because I don’t know how to tell him” she said sadly. “Have you tried telling him at least” Barbara asked her friend gently. “How does he feel about having a kid? Does he even want to marry you?” “I don’t know Barbara. I want to know myself” she said exasperatedly. “Right now he has so much going for him. I don’t know how he feels starting a family so soon” she said letting her voice trail off. “Well did the doctor tell you how far you are” Barbara asked concern about the fetus’s health. “Yeah, she said the baby is about 8 wks old” she said gently touching her stomach. “Wow, 8 wks already” Barbara said letting out a low whistle. “How are you planning to hide it? You’re stomach isn’t going to get any smaller. Pretty soon everyone will find out.” “I know…I know…” she said letting out a sigh.
“I’m very confused right now Barb… Can you imagine being a single mother” she said her eyes begin to water again. “Hey…hey… you stop that right now” Barbara said going over to her. “Stop crying…I don’t want the baby to come out with an ugly pouting face. Who says you’re going to be a single mother. I’ll help with the baby; I’ll be his or her godmother” she said trying to cheer her up. “Thanks” Kristy said with a small laugh as she hugged Barbara. “You’re the best. Thanks for being here for me” Kristy whisper softly. “That’s what I’m here for… your personal maid. That’s what you call me in front of Louis. Remember” Barbara asked rolling her eyes. “I was just kidding” Kristy said with a laugh. “Don’t take it so personal” she said as she got up feeling a lot better having finally told Barbara. “Go to sleep and stop thinking about it. Tomorrow is a new day; we’ll find a way to tell Louis” Barbara said as she went to her room. “Ok… good night Barb” Kristy said going to her room.
He sat lifelessly in the dark staring blankly at the wall. The chirping from the cricket seems to get louder and louder while he sat deep in thought. He can’t take it anymore… “BE QUIET” he yelled getting frustrated. He sat thinking about what he saw getting angrier as the images replays itself over and over in his head. He got up kicking the table and chair in his fury destroying everything in his path. The eerie glow coming from the small TV. flickered on and off. He recalls how that guy had his arms around her…enjoying their dinner and each others company…while him all alone could only watch from far away longing it was him with her instead of that guy he saw her with. WHY?!!!! He thought angrily as he turned and looked at his wall covered with pictures of Barbara. “You of all people… why must I fell in love with you” he screamed at her picture. “You don’t deserve me. I always did everything for you but you never notice” he continued accusingly. “Everything I ever did went on unnoticed” he growled angrily tearing at her pictures off the wall. He pressed his face against the wall next to one of her picture; crying silently to himself. “Why do you keep doing this to me” he asked sadly running his hand slowly down the side of her face feeling vulnerable. “I will make you suffer 100x more than what I’m going through” he cried angrily taking a gulp from his beer and tossing it to the ground. Barbara…Barbara… he mutters to himself as his vision begins to blurred and he passed out on the floor.
