Worth mentioning, one of the finalists, Yung Mei Ling, who later became a very famous and loved TV star, committed suicide and died in May 1985, one week after celebrating her 26th birthday with her fans. During the pageant, Barbara Yung was mentioned occasionally because of her sweet cute face and good education (college graduate in textiles design). Her parents divorced when she was little, and she emigrated to England with her mom in her teens and stayed there through her college years. She was 1st runner-up in a UK Chinatown pageant in 1980. However, her height (5’ 2 1/2) limited her chances in Miss HK 1982. It was also rumoured that because of her ‘too talkative and forthcoming’ attitude during the pageant, many pageant crew members of TVB did not really like her, and even ‘cursed’ her to lose backstage as the pageant was going on!
The winner, Anglie Leung, received a gold scepter worth HKD 100,000 dollar, as a celebration of the 10th anniversary of the Miss Hong Kong Pageant from TVB.
First runner-up Cally Kwong, went to Miss World 1982. She also became a famous singer in Hong Kong during the late 80s, and now she has her own jewelry business. She had been married to but is now divorced from actor Lui Leung-wai (whose ex-girlfriends included some other beauty queens like Crystal Kwok, Miss Chinatown USA 1987, and Kathy Chow, contestant of Miss HK 1985). Before the pageant, Kwong was a public relations officer and had also taken some modelling lessons.
Second-runner-up Isabella Kau went to Miss International 1982. She used to be a part-time model in the same modelling agency as Cally Kwong and Winnie Chin (1st runner-up of Miss HK 1981). Before enrolling in the 1982 pageant, both Kwong and Kau asked Chin whether pageant results were fixed. Chin said no and both Kwong and Kau decided to compete. Both of them became favourites and made the top 3 together! Kau now has her own restaurant and image consulting business.
Wendy Ha, Miss Photogenic winner, was among the most discussed girls this year. As one of the hot picks for the crown, she claimed to be a secretary and part-time model, but rumours had it that she was only educated up to junior high school (not high-school graduation as she declared to TVB), and spoke terrible English such that she could only give one-word answers like ‘Yes’ or ‘No’ when the judges conducted English interviews with the girls before the final. Some girls also discovered that Wendy Ha was using ‘bra pads’ during the swimsuit competition in the semi-finals to make her breasts look larger. They complained that when they reported this incident to TVB, TVB was biased towards Wendy Ha and wanted to turn a blind eye to it. In any case, the incident was eventually known even to the media, and Wendy Ha lost the ‘spark’ in the final, where she failed to make the top 3.
Shum Kam-ling, Miss Young winner, was a bank clerk before the pageant. She won the Best National Costume trophy in Miss Asia & Pacific 1982, held in Malaysia. She was also a TV host for a short time before becoming a DJ. After her reign, she got married with a hairdresser very shortly after they met, but the marriage broke up equally promptly. She was a singer for a brief time too. Now she is in the insurance industry.
#14 Stella thingy Lai-yin was another hot contender for a top 3 spot. She studied college in Canada and was said to finish 4th in the final according to unofficial sources. She got into movies after the pageant but soon quitted to start her own business.
#20 Hon Yin-hung, Miss Friendship winner, wanted to have a successful career in public relations. Her sister was TVB actress Hon Ma-lei. She did not make the top 15.
The tallest contestant was #19 Tsang Yuen-han (5’8 1/2), who made the top 15. The shorest girls were #5 thingy Tak-wai, #6 Barbara Yung and #12 Ng Ha-ping --- all stood at 5’2 1/2 and only Barbara Yung made the top 15. Ng Ha-ping acted and hosted in TVB for some time, and also released her albums in the mid-1980s.
