Chapter 7
Barbara begins to cry heavily. Michael comes over next to her tight in his arms as his tears start falling down his face.
Barbara: I rather stay away from you for the rest of my life so that you can live. It’s better for me to see you in newspapers and pictures than not to see you at all.
Michael: Oh my god, I can’t believe this. Why didn’t you tell me? Why did you have to keep it to yourself?
Barbara: Do you think you would’ve let me go?
Michael, speaking with an upset tone: I rather take my chance and die early even if I could live a year or two with you. Being with you is worth cutting my life short. Why did you decide that for me?
Barbara, looking directly into Michael’s eyes: Look at your life right now. Look at how wonderful it is. You have the best life any man can have. I am so happy that it turns out like that. I would’ve blamed myself everyday if I decided to stay in your life and a few years later you would die. Do you think I will be happy with that outcome?
Michael, holding Barbara’s face with his hands: I wish you told me about this and I would have decided for myself.
Barbara: How can you say that now? Do you regret for having a great family? Great kids.
Michael: Barbara, I don’t regret anything. All I regret is not being able to marry you sooner so none of these had to happen. But wait, your death, how did it happen?
Barbara: Another long story that you didn’t know. I was so devastated after talking to the oracle that night. I told you that I had to go away for a few days with my mom. It was not a vacation.
*Flashback*
Mom: Barbara, why are you so sad? Did you get into a fight with Michael?
Barbara: No mom, I just miss him, that’s all.
Mom: Well that’s good. I am very happy to see you both can finally be together. Well, Barbara, there is a reason why we’re here in Paris. I want to tell you this for the longest time. I feel now this is the time.
Barbara’s mom begins to cry.
Barbara: What’s wrong mother?
Mom: Honey, I am so sorry I kept this away from you. When your dad and I first had you and your twin sister, we were very poor in HK.
Barbara: Twin sister? I have a sister? How come you never told me? Where is she?
Mom: Yes, you have a twin sister. Her name is Mei Yung. Let me continue. Your dad passed away so early. I was on the streets with both of you. You and your sister were only 6 months. I didn’t know what to do. I had no help from anyone. No one wanted to hire me. One day, you both caught an attention of this loving couple. They were vacationing in HK. They were married for 15 years but had no children. They could see that I needed help so that asked me if they can take one of you with them back to Paris. I was very hesistant, but I thought over carefully that if it means that giving one of you a better life, then I would accept that. So they took your sister back to Paris with them and adopted her as their daughter. They were very nice to us. They sent us money every 6 months to make sure we were doing good. This is how I was able to relocate us to England, so that you could have the best education and life.
Barbara, with excitement: So now that’s why we’re here in Paris. To see my sister? Wow, I have a sister.
Mom: No, that is not the only reason why we’re here Barbara.
Her mom starts crying again.
Mom: Your sister has only a few more days to live. She’s in the hospital right now.
Barbara: Oh my god. My sister is dying? From what?
Mom: Heart disease.
Barbara cries together with her mom.

Chapter 8
Michael: Wow, you had gone through so much. Why didn’t I know?
Barbara: We took advantage of this situation Michael.
Michael: How?
Barbara: I was able to spend the last few days with her before she passed away. That was the hardest time in my life, from finding out I had a sister to seeing her dying. Right after she passed away, I came up with an idea. I told my mother everything I learned from the oracle. Together we came up with a plan. I was waiting from my friend to come to my apartment that morning after we our conversation the night before. When I saw him walking into the building, I quickly turned on the gas and lied dead on the ground. My mother had arranged with the chief doctor there in the ER unit to have my sister and I switch once I arrived at the hospital. The moment that my body was wheeled into the emergency room, my sister’s body was wheeled in at the same with the same clothing like I had on. So the doctor pronounced her dead. I then took off from the hospital with the help of my mother. There was a private jet waiting for me at a small airport nearby and I left HK directly to here. I came here to vacation with my mom when I was 10. Ever since, then this has been my favorite place. So I thought why couldn’t I move here in live here forever?
Michael, in shock: I can’t believe this. I never thought of this.
Barbara: I had to fake my own death in order to end my life here in HK. I didn’t want any reporters after me. I knew that only death could only stop you from looking for me. My mom told me few days ago that you came to visit my grave in Cambridge. She lets me know after your every visit. And believe me, there are so many times I just want to call you to let you know that I am not dead, but just thinking how far I have gone sacrificing so that you can have a life, I stop myself.
Michael, pulls Barbara to his chest: Do you know how painful it has been for me? Barbara, I was never over your death. I didn’t feel like doing anything after you died.
Barbara: I knew that it would be hard for you at first, but eventually you would pass that stage. Besides, I know that Jaime would be there for you. She and her family would support all the way through. When I think about that, I don’t worry for you anymore.
Michael: But you, you’re living all by yourself with just pictures of me. How is it that you’re happy? It is so unfair to you.
Barbara: When you truly love someone, you want to see that person happy in regardless that person is with you or not. You’re always in my heart and mind. Look at this place. You’re with me everywhere here. There is no fairness when it comes to true love.
When Michael hears Barbara says this, he loves her even more. Her love for him is too great that he feels that he doesn’t deserve it. He starts to think of how Barbara loves him and how Jaime loves him. They can’t be compared to each other. Barbara gives up everything so that he can have a great life. On the other hand, Jaime was willing to do anything just to have him.
Michael and Barbara are still holding on to each other.
Michael kisses her on her lips: Now that I found you, I am not letting you out of my sight. 20 years is enough.
Barbara pulls away from Michael’s arms: Michael, don’t forget that you are married with children. Don’t do this. You don’t want to bring your family shame.
Michael: I need to do what’s right in my heart. My children are still my children. I will always love them and take care of them as a dad. I will explain this Jaime and will ask her for her forgiveness and a divorce.
Barbara: Divorce? Please don’t do that. She loves you and she’s helped you so much.
Michael: Really? You know that!? Barbara, you can’t believe everything you read in the papers. Of course I had to say great things about my wife to the public. It’s true that I have been a faithful husband because I am only faithful to you. I can’t see myself with anyone romantically other than you. Jaime has always been a companion to me. I have my duties as a husband, but it’s not the right love to be in a happy marriage. I don’t care about my reputation in HK, it doesn’t bring me happiness. It is you.
Barbara: If you don’t know about my existence then you wouldn’t think this way.
Michael: True, if I don’t know. But now that I know, I have to do what’s right for us. I have always been devoted to you and still is devoted to you, whether you were dead or alive. You never left my mind and heart. I love you more than ever.
After Barbara hears this, her tears ran down her face, and Michael takes pulls her in and hold her tightly.
Barbara: You may die soon if I were in your life.
Michael: I don’t care. Even if I die tomorrow, I will accept that, as long as you take me into your life.
Barbara finally smiles for the first time. Michael is mesmerized when she smiles and he can’t resist but to bend down to her lips and kiss her passionately.
After their kiss, they both hold hands walking out to the garden. They sit on the bench and enjoy the view and the lilies. Her head was on his shoulder and his arm was over hers.
Barbara: You know 15 years ago, I really missed our special place. I came back to HK to visit it. I had to disguise myself. I couldn’t believe it was so messy with weeds all over the place and the lilies were long dead.
Michael: Yes, after you left, I couldn’t bear to come back to face it. It was too painful for me.
Barbara: That’s what I thought. I didn’t want our special place to be like that so I hired a mute gardener to take care of it every week. I didn’t want him to talk to others about that place because I was afraid information would get leaked out.
Michael: If I had come there sooner, I would’ve discovered you sooner then. Well, the past is over. I want to spend the rest of my life here with you. Promise me that you wait here for me while I’m back to HK. I want to come back to HK to finalize my marriage with Jaime. I want to take my kids here if you don’t mind.
Barbara: If they are yours, they are mine too. But do you think Jaime will you have custody.
Michael: I will let the children decide if they want to be with me or Jaime. I will not force them.
Chapter 9 (end)
They both sit there talking and watched the sunset. They come back into the house and prepare dinner together. They enjoy a romantic dinner with candle lights while listening to their favorite mb themesongs. After dinner, they head to Barbara’s room where Michael is even more surprised to what he sees. On her dresser is a nice picture frame of Michael’s picture with his glasses on and deep in his thoughts.
Barbara: This is how I see you every morning.
Michael: Oh Mei Ling. Do you know what I was thinking of when I was taking that picture?
Barbara, smiling shyly: No, tell me.
Michael bends down to her face and whispers: You, my darling.
Barbara: You’re still as handsome as ever. Even though you have a different look, more modern style, lighter hair, but your eyes and your smile are still the same.
Michael: You’re more beautiful than ever Mei Ling. No one can take your place in my heart. For the past 20 years, I only see you in my dream, telling me to go one with my life. This was how I’ve been able to move on, but there is a deep sorrow in my heart that no one knows except for me and Andy.
Barbara: Andy?
Michael: Yes, Andy has been my only confidant.
Barbara: Well, I am glad he’s been there for you.
They both hug each tightly for a while. Barbara and Michael lie down and held each other on Barbara’s bed. They didn’t sleep the whole night, but instead, they watched their favorite series together, the Fearless Duo.
Barbara and Michael spend the next several days inseparately. To them, it’s a dream come true. Never in their wildest dreams that they can be with each other like this. The next several days is unforgettable as Barbara takes Michael out for sightseeing, and being with each other without being afraid of others.
It is very difficult and emotional for Michael to say good-bye to Barbara temporarily. But he has to go back home to complete his marriage with Jaime.
After landing in HK, Michael goes to his office immediately where he set up that he could work from anywhere. He takes anything that are essential. He leaves the office to go home.
Michael walks into in his home and looks for Jaime.
Michael: Jaime?
Jaime: Hi darling, you’re finally home? Where have you been? What kind of business trip is this?
Michael: Jaime, please sit down. I need to talk to you.
Jaime: You look serious. Is everything ok?
Michael: Yes, I’m fine. There is something I need to tell you. Barbara is alive.
Jaime: What!? She’s alive? How?
Michael tells Jaime the whole story.
Jaime, sobbing with tears: That doesn’t change anything. We are a family Michael. We’ve been married for 15 years.
Michael: I love Mei Ling. Please understand for me. Out of anyone, you should know this. You know how hurt I was when Mei Ling passed away. It took me years to get myself back on my feet. And you know that I am still not over her.
Jaime: Please don’t tell me that you want to divorce and be with her.
Michael: I am really sorry Jaime. Please forgive me. I need to follow my heart.
Jaime: If you divorce me, I will take custody of the kids and forbid them from seeing you.
Michael, getting very upset: Don’t you dare use the kids against me. They are my children and I love them dearly. I’ve taken great care of you the past 15 years and provided everything you needed. How can you still be selfish like this?
Jaime: There is a price to pay for betraying me Michael.
Michael: You know what, this is why Barbara is the only woman I love. I have always loved her and I always will. She cares and loves me the way you never know how. Don’t threaten me. The children will understand and love me the way I am. I have been a great dad and I know it. And you, are you always there for them. Ask yourself if you have been a great mother.
Michael walks upstairs to pack his clothes as Jaime is crying and shouting downstairs.
Jaime walks into their bedroom.
Jaime: You will pay for this Michael. After what I’ve done for you, helping you to get to where you are.
Michael: Yes, I owe you and your family. You all helped me in the beginning. Ever since then, I used my own talent and I work hard for myself. I did not depend on you or your family, and I’ve always repaid, haven’t I?
Jaime is stuck after Michael said this. She angrily slaps him on his face.
Michael: Slap me as much as you want because I won’t be in your life anymore.
Michael storms out of the room and walks quickly downstairs. The taxi is waiting for him in the front. He quickly gets until the taxi as Jaime runs after him and cusses.
The taxi takes Michael to his children’s school where he picks them up and takes them to a restaurant. He then explains everything to his children asks them whom they choose to be with. Luckily, they understand him, but they want to stay back in HK with their mom first. Michael promises them that he will come back in few months to take them to South Africa to see if they like it there and for them to meet his new wife, Barbara.
The children are dropped off at home while Michael is dropped off at the airport to be back for South Africa.
As the taxi pulls up to the cottage, he can see Barbara gardening in the front with her back out. She doesn’t hear him because she is listening to music with her headphones. He comes up to her and drops his luggages next to her feet.
Barbara, looking astonished, but excited with a big smile on her face. He pulls out a beautiful bouquet of roses to her. She sniffs if and drops it on his luggage. They both embrace each other and Michael swings her around. They hold on to each other for the longest time in the garden. Michael then kisses Barbara passionately as the sunset. He then whispers, “Happy 46th Birthday my sweetheart”.
He takes her hand and pulls her over to the bench. Michael then kneels down with one knee and asks, “Will you marry me and allow me to take care of you the rest of my life?”
Barbara is very touched and sheds her tears: Yes, I am happy to be your wife.
Michael: I don’t care what’s in destiny for us, but I want to spend every hour of my life with you. I am still devoted to you….always….and forever.
